Review

"This beautiful, richly illustrated book is Julia Child infused with a low-carb sensibility. For anyone who loves French cooking, especially those creamy sauces and succulent cuts of meat, this book is an essential addition to your kitchen. And unlike Child's, the recipes are simple, uncomplicated―easy enough for any home cook pressed for time. Bordeaux Kitchen combines a return to history with a modern sensibility. Plus, the science now clearly tells us that these foods are good for health: so you can have your leg of lamb and eat it, too." ―Nina Teicholz, New York Times bestselling author of The Big Fat Surprise (Nina Teicholz New York Times bestselling author of The Big Fat Surprise)

Tania Teschke’s The Bordeaux Kitchen: An Immersion into French Food and Wine, Inspired by Ancestral Traditions is a huge achievement. If you’re interested in really learning about French cuisine, this is the book you want. The first thing I noticed is that The Bordeaux Kitchen is made the way a book should be made. It’s 650 beautiful, full-color pages with 180 traditional French recipes and marvelous photos taken all over southwestern France by Tania herself. The margins are filled with anecdotes, call-outs, and explanations that add real flavor to the topic at hand. The Bordeaux Kitchen truly is what its title suggests—an immersion into French food and wine. It explores subjects such as The French Paradox of eating a rich diet while still enjoying great longevity. It weaves ancestral living with good nutrition, food sourcing, and a wide variety of pro tips such as how to keep your knives sharpened. The Bordeaux Kitchen is also a personal account of Tania and her family’s discovery and enjoyment of all the opportunities for living with intention, tradition, and awareness that their journey has offered them. I believe this book could easily be used as a text in any culinary arts school, while still remaining a tool and an experience that anyone can use and enjoy.

I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this MASTERPIECE! Tania, this is a remarkable collection and portrait of artisanal and ancestral French cooking! I am just in awe. This is a French cooking bible, something for the mantel to pass down generation to generation. It is astonishing what you have accomplished, and you should never forget how important it is. I will cherish it forever, thank you for your hard work and dedication. I will definitely be ordering one to give away to my subscribers. Glorious keepsake! And, it's ginormous...a treasure that will surely keep on giving.

Bought this for my mom for Christmas. It is a big, heavy cookbook, full of beautiful photographs and delicious recipes. It’s more than a cookbook...it’s an educational journey!

This is one amazing volume. It's so much more than a cookbook -- the culinary and dietary education included are worth the price by themselves. In addition to the wonderful sections on everything from butchery, to seasonal eating and of course the recipes themselves (which I have barely begun diving into) the photography is INCREDIBLE.

A totally compelling and summoning book. A nutrition-cookbook that reads like a great novel. Delightful to all culinary senses and makes one of the best gifts you could give to anyone who eats food. Lovely, beautiful, and beyond any other book of its kind.

Amazing book with so much charm and love and taste for life in it!!! Outstanding recipes and pictures , magic experience and flavor of France on every page! Even for those who has no idea where the kitchen is this is a great journey into french cooking traditions and french passion and talent to enjoy life in every aspect!

I have been a long time fan of Tania Tescheke, first discovering her blog a few years ago. Her combination of artistic photos and recipes drew my eye and had me coming back to discover more. I've followed her on social media and watched this book be put together piece by piece, lovingly through her education on the foundation of food that spanned towns, cities, and even countries. I imagined myself standing in the fields with her, learning along side as she herself explored nutrition at it's core. I already know that what she brings to the page is the love she has put on the table for her own family. What she wants to share with her readers. This is not a cook book of quick meals and busy family dinners, this is the book you pull out when you want to feed your family with love. This is the book you pull out when you feel like you want to OWN your kitchen, and be one with the foundation of food this good earth has to offer. Techeke's understanding of not only food, but wine, and the journey she takes you on through words, recipes and photos is beautiful and inspirational. It's a stunning book on it's own, and as you page through, you're instantly going to feel like your kitchen has been transformed into your studio. The food, your art. I am wildly excited to turn each page, and try my hand at it. Tania Teschke is our modern day Julia Child, you cannot go wrong by welcoming her into your kitchen.

Review

"I believe Rowan Williams is one of the most creative and profound theologians writing in the latter half of the twentieth century. There is extraordinary significance to bringing together many of these essays into one book which makes them available to a wider public." L. Gregory Jones, Duke University "A sustained and remarkably coherent essay on the daunting task of doing theology today. They again show him to be a theologian of immense erudition and maturity, and, perhaps more importantly, of fine sensitivity to the subterfuges of human frailty."Times Literary Supplement "It is certainly a thought-provoking book; and if it gets people thinking honestly and deeply about the problems it discusses, then I am sure its author will be satisfied." Church Times "Few contemporary theologians could offer such an exhilarating, authoritative and properly demanding exploration of what it means to do Christian theology. A companion volume on Christian ethics would be more than welcome." Nicholas Sagovsky, University of Newcastle. "Rowan Williams speaks out of a fund of learning and pastoral experience which has made him arguably the most distinguished theologian in the English-speaking world. In Williams' hands the language of finality and universal significance gains unexpected energy." The Way. "[On Christian Theology] exhibits a distinctive theological posture...having remarkable and deep internal coherence. His terms of engagement do not so much incite challenge and response as provoke fresh and more supple thinking of one's own. And that provocation is accompanied by the intense esthetic satisfaction of being drawn into the intellectual dance of so nimble and inventive a theological sensibility." David H. Kelsey, Yale Divinity School. "The range of these essays, the importance of the subjects they treat, and, of course, Williams's erudition all mean that these essays will need to be taken seriously. A wide range of readers will owe Williams a debt of gratitude for the scatter of characteristically brilliant insights in these essays." The Heythrop Journal "All in all, this is a valuable and stumulating book - one to which the reader will want to return." Studies in World Christianity

From the Back Cover

In this comprehensive collection of his work, Rowan Williams, one of the most significant theologians of his generation, tackles many of the most searching questions of theology and society at the end of the twentieth century. This is a book that bridges the gap between the academic, the spiritual and the political. It is the culmination of 20 years of teaching theology and of pastoral ministry, and reflects a continuing engagement with the patristic and medieval tradition of theology as well as with issues of contemporary theology and philosophy. Williams argues that theology moves constantly between the three registers of the celebratory, the communicative and the critical, and is held together by something not captured by any of these modes. He reflects on the fundamental connection between theology and self-awareness and self-critique, and discusses doctrinal issues - creation, incarnation, the Trinity - in this light. He addresses the nature of signs and sacraments and looks at the public and ethical embodiment of this theological vision. Overall, Williams presents a theological perspective acutely aware of the cultural and political crises of our time. He suggests that detachment from doctrinal tradition will not solve our problems and argues instead for an imaginative reworking of the doctrinal tradition, formed in an intense dialogue with modernity and postmodernity.

Take on this "On Christian Theology" if you choose to learn more of religious things, like matters of the heart and unities in God. The writer, Rowan Williams, says, "Theology needs to make connections, to search out and display unities..." This book by the Archbishop of Canterbury does that, even for this lay man who spent time pondering over ideas and directions in a manner that required study as well as reading. There are large subjects addressed, like "The Judgement of the World," where he addresses many like ideas: "The diffuse discontent that consumer pluralism can engender (although it largely contains and even utilizes it) yields itself readily to any program that dresses itself persuasively enough in moral rhetoric..." There's a taste of the theologian's writing. You won't find this on a popular reading list, but certainly the publisher Blackwell has found a steady seller with this compilation. The subtitle is "Challenges in contemporary Christianity," and apt it is--of special interest to Christians in general and Episcopalians and Anglicans in particular. Afterall, the Archbishop is an Anglican. Here he remarks on the world and we as creatures in relation to God. Along the way he says what God is to us and creation. He calls this God's freedom: "...God in creation means that God cannot make a reality that then needs to be actively governed, subdued, bent to the divine purpose away from its natural course. If God creates freely, God does not need the power of a sovereign: what is, is from God." Sometimes the writing is clearer to me than others, which is my limitation. I understand, "what is, is from God." Here's an understandable statement, among many in an understandable book, from the chapter "On Being Creatures": "Being creatures is learning humility, not as submission to an alien will, but as the acceptance of limit and death..." He says for that we need moral imagination. One gets the idea of the scope of his concerns and thinking, which are matters of the heart and living. In the chapter, "Word and Spirit" (again larger subjects, but fascinating and engaging ones to the Christian reader, and others I think), the author says what is extraordinary, or ordinary about the Christian human being. For afterall, this man can speak of being a Christian and of the Christian human being: "We can recognize perhaps more clearly the dispressure of the figure of the crucified Messiah: we can accept more readily the breaking of certain kinds of sacral barrier, so that 'Spirit' ceases to be confined to the extraordinary but becomes a qualification of Christian human being."Some other chapters: "Triniity and Ontology," "Between the Cherubim," ("It will effectively be claiming tht what is vital to Christian discourse about the resurrection can be stated exclusively in terms of what happens to the minds and hearts of believers when proclamation is made that the victim of the crucifixion is the one through whom God continues to act and speak."), "Nature and Sacrament," "Sacraments of the New Society" ("...we are either bound together by being 'seen' by God as distant, as strangers, or bound together in a common assurance that we are received, affirmed, adopted."Today, in this season of Epiphany, in the winter of California where I live, I wanted to write a poem for this review (a kind of review in itself). Here it is:Epiphany Brings Newsby Peter MenkinThe Winter is young,Trees bare against a grey sky.Rain here.Epiphany brings newsTo me of the resurrection'sGifts.Through this gift,New creation,In the cross-resurrection.This Rowan WilliamsTells us these things;Wait on the Christ-open heart. This theologian I am readingSays,Shed enmity towards failures,Enmity between people,Shed this. Then comes friendship with God.Not matters of the mind,Of the head,But of the heart.I think of Easter,"the living of the believing life."Our trust is in Easter. Many people have said that Rowan Williams writes of the crisis in our world, even the back cover notes proclaim such: "Overall, Williams presents a theological perspective acutely aware of the cultural and political crises of our time..." I would be remiss to leave that statement out of this review. For me, though, I found this a book of spirit and interesting writing opening windows and doors during this winter season into a light on the Trinity and man's relation to God in Christ. This isn't a book for a quick read, and I enjoyed the studying of text, even where I knew I was becoming only familiar with terms and people. As I've begun to become familiar with Rowan William's writings, I think I chose a good book as part of that familiarization process.Peter Menkin -- Epiphany

Unless you are interested in detailed theology I would avoid this book. It will keep you working your mind and your background in theology and philosophy. It's not an easy read but it is truly valuable.

Rowan Williams is the former Archbishop of Canterbury. This book is a collection of theological reflections from an Anglican perspective on several key theological issues such as the Trinity, the Incarnation, the work and person of Christ, and other theological questions.Rowan Williams is a gifted writer and theologian and has written many other interesting books. Fortunately despite its travails, the Anglican church still seems capable of producing theologians that are genuinely ecumenical, balanced and orthodox and also intellectually well-formed. Cardinal Newman was perhaps the best mind Anglicanism produced, but there are many other great Anglican divines such as Thomas Cramner, Richard Hooker, Jeremy Taylor, George Herbert, Edward Pusey and many others whose writings and reflections can be illuminating to those inside and outside their communion.Williams is fortunately a theologian who is well-grounded in history, patristics, spirituality and 'Catholic' (by Catholic I mean the first 1000 years of the undivided church) thinker. He has written important monographs on Arius and the Arian heresy, edited writings by Cardinal Henry Newman, produced insightful articles about topics such as Thomas Aquinas's theology of the Trinity (clearing the Angelic Doctor of many of the charges made against his excellent Trinitarian theology) and is widely knowledgeable about Christian spirituality, including the Roman Catholic and Orthodox, as well as Desert traditions. His reflections are thus valuable and worth careful reading, especially in an age when tribalism, fundamentalism and ecclesial triumphalism are returning. It is refreshing to see someone writing in the Catholic tradition (Catholic in the sense of balancing reading the Bible in the light of Christian history, theology and traditions) and not just arrogantly dismissing the insights of other communions or pushing some ideological agenda, as countless apologists and other 'Christian' thinkers tend to do. Especially tiresome is the cosy but Faustian alliance many Christian leaders and thinkers have made with the right-wing side of politics to push as what they see as Christianity, but which selects some elements of the Gospel and NT at the expense of others. The Anglican Communion and its bitter debates over homosexual people and the ordination of women show that perhaps these controverted issues, which right-wing Christians could not accept (many Anglicans chose to join Catholicism or broke communion with the Anglicans after some liberal reforms were enacted) show that perhaps not even someone of Rowan William's talents could handle these issue, and his sense of balance and desire to dialogue, rather than enforce unity and conformity, is perhaps sadly reflected in the current problems over Pope Francis and the Roman Communion, where there are deep divides over issues such as whether the divorced and remarried can have the eucharist. In a broken and flawed world, heaven on Earth is perhaps impossible until the end of time. Even so, William's balanced Catholic theology offers a refreshing break from the often sterile fundamentalisms and second-rate apologetics that dominate Christian discourse today.

The Archbishop has packed this volume with deep thoughts and many profound observations. It is a delight for the throlgogian or seminary student. It is, however, very dense and it is at times very difficult to follow the line of thought without rereading the chapter again (and sometimes again and again).

I certainly did, and I started applying Cal’s ideas to my own life immediately.” —Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism   “You’re not the user, you’re the product. Hang up, log off, and tune in to a different way to be in the world. Bravo, Cal. Because of that, I feel compelled to share a review with you before you make any commitment.I’ll divide this review into 2 parts. First I will share the reasons why I chose to read the book and some personal takeaways. The second part is a summary of the book with a few short excerpts I highlighted while taking notes.PERSONAL THOUGHTSI probably pre-ordered the present book because I’ve been intrigued by how the overused of new technologies [specially social networks] have influenced our societies during the last 10 years. This latest wave is actually recent, and being in my early 30s I still remember clearly how life was during high school and early days in college before this explosion. We all acknowledge the wonders of technology, how the development of new tools has helped the prosperity of our societies in many dimensions. However, the other side of the coin is equally important—consequences that deserve to be understood and evaluated. Besides the social, emotional and psychological aspects, which are the main focus in Digital Minimalism, I do also care about the impacts on our physical health caused by technology overexposure. Not only how the devices shape our physical posture for worst over the years but also the detrimental effects of electromagnetic fields to our overall health. That said, I’ve been trying to be mindful about digital/technology use during the last 4-5 years. I still have some social network accounts, but I feel quite odd among my peers because I’ve been checking these accounts less often than ever—about once a month—but I rarely post pictures or comments. It brings a deep feeling of freedom and calmness. In terms of internet usage, I keep my phone on airplane mode for around 80% of the awake time [sometimes for the entire day], and I often try to go on adventures up in the mountains to be away from signal access for days or weeks at a time. This desire to be unreachable has grown over time and, although it makes me feel grounded and present, I admit that can be quite selfish of me towards loved ones.Reading this book helped me better understand the forces behind addictive technologies, exposed me to pragmatic ideas to implement the minimalism philosophy, and supported my previous thoughts on how we can better handle digital overexposure. I can’t recommend this book enough.SUMMARY[Intro] Digital minimalism, according to Cal Newport, is a philosophy where we focus our online time on a small number of carefully selected and optimized activities that support the things we value. We learn how the author got interested in the topic after receiving feedbacks from his previous book.[Chapter 1] Cal starts with a refresher—bringing back to the early and “potentially innocent" days of Facebook and the iPhone—then, he soon shows how these new technologies took the lead by dictating how we behave and how we feel by pushing us to overuse their products for as long as possible. Interesting story about how NYU professor Adam Alter shifted his research topic after getting “trapped” for 6 uninterrupted hours playing a game on his phone during a cross-country flight. Newport then explains 2 of the main forces used by technology companies to encourage behavior addiction: the need for social approval and positive reinforcement.[Chapter 2] Here is a primer on digital minimalism. We learn that "to reestablish control, we need to move beyond tweaks and instead rebuild our relationship with technology from scratch, using our deeply held values as a foundation.” Cal explains why digital minimalism works through 3 principles. [1] The first principle argues that, when we clutter our time and attention with many apps, social networks, and services, we create an overall negative cost compared to the benefits of each individual item in isolation. I was absolutely delighted to read his arguments by sharing Henry Thoreau’s decision to live for two years in a cabin near the Walden Pond. Thoreau's book, Walden, has actually impacted my life tremendously when I first read as a freshmen in college. [2] The second principle says that besides choosing a technology that supports our values, we should also think how we should use them to extract full benefits—optimizing, therefore, the returns. Here Cal shows how “the law of diminishing returns” can be directly correlated with potential negative effects when technology usage surpass the benefits they can generate. [3] The last principle shows that being more intentional about how we engage with new technologies is one way to become sincerely satisfied. For that, the author illustrates the Amish's approach towards technology: “they start with the things they value most, then work backward to ask whether a given new technology performs more harm than good with respect to their values.”[Chapter 3] In this chapter Cal shares a system for digital decluttering by transforming our relationship with technology. He encourages us to apply a rapid transformation: “something that occurs in a short period of time and is executed with enough conviction that the results are likely to stick.” He divides the process in 3 steps. [1] The first one is to establish which ones of the new “optional” technologies we can step away from without creating major problems in either our professional or personal life. [2] The second step is to take the leap and give ourselves a 30-day break while we rediscover the activities generate real satisfaction without being attached to our devices. [3] The final step is the reintroduction, building it from the scratch, following the principles previously explained in chapter 2 by choosing carefully the apps/tools and using them with a deeper sense of purpose.[Chapter 4] This is most probably my favorite chapter, where we learn the value of solitude. Cal starts by sharing an interesting story of President Lincoln’s decision to reside in a cottage during months at time, communicating back and forth to the White House on horseback. The author then shares the benefits of solitude such as being a prerequisite for original and creative thoughts, as well as a deeper appreciation for interpersonal connections when they occur. He then moves gears towards how solitude depravation has impacted our lives, showing, for example, that the rise in anxiety-related problems among students coincide with the use of smartphones and social media. At the end of the chapter we learn 3 practices to foster more solitude moments in our daily lives: [1] To leave our phones and devices at home. [2] To go on long walks. [3] To spend time journaling. They all make sense to me—more important, though, they can generate extra benefits once we build a positive habit.[Chapter 5] Now we jump to a chapter rich in social psychology lessons. We first learn how our brains evolved to desire social interactions, but differently than the rich face-to-face encounters, during the last decade or so we have been bombarded by digital communication tools, encouraging interactions through short, text-based messages and approval clicks. At the end Cal offers practices to develop meaningful “conversation-centric communication”. They range from avoiding clicking the “like” button to holding more meaningful conversations during office hours.[Chapter 6] Now we jump to an empowering chapter. We learn to cultivate high-quality leisure time at the same time we declutter the low-quality digital distractions from our lives. They both, in fact, work together in order to create a more purposeful habit. This chapter is filled with real life examples of successful stories where helpful lessons are drawn at the end of each example. Like in the previous chapters, Cal doesn’t share only examples, but also practical ways to adopt his claims. My favorite suggestion is about “schedule in advance the time we spend on low-quality leisure.”[Chapter 7] The final chapter is about building a more resistant mindset to understand and therefore avoid “the fragile attention economics that support companies like Facebook helps reveal an important strategy for succeeding with digital minimalism.” Here practices are provided as tactics when further discipline is required: [1] Delete social media from our phone to remove the ability to access them at any time. If we are going to use social medial, we should access them through a web browser. [2] Turn our devices into purposeful tools, diminishing the number of things they enable us to do. On Cal's own words “I’m not talking about occasionally blocking some sites when working on a particularly hard project. I want you instead to think about these services as being blocked by default, and made available to you on an intentional schedule.” [3] To use social media like a social media professional does. [4] To embrace the slow media consumption by maximizing the quality of what we consume. [5] Making the hard choice to switch from smartphone to a “dumb” phone.FINAL THOUGHTSWell, it doesn’t matter where in the spectrum we fall as long as we vow [draw a line] to move the needle towards a more meaningful and intentional technology usage, diminishing our “natural” tendency to become dependent on digital devices. While reading Digital Minimalism I thought about titles that could complement the content. The book Essentialism, by Greg McKeown, is definitely the one who comes to mind first. It helped me focus on less but more important tasks, giving clarity to what matters most. Originals, by Adam Grant, helped me see the world of creativity through a different angle by being more true to who we are. The latest book Atomic Habits, by James Clear, has already influenced me to build better and more meaningful habits during the last 3 months. It can be an extremely helpful source to apply the lessons from Chapter 6. Last, if you would like to learn a bit more about electromagnetic fields and how we can minimize the dangers look no further than The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs, by Nicolas Pineault.I hope the review helps you in some way.Take good care,Haical

Cal Newport is one of my favorite thinkers. He got his Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT and is now a Professor at Georgetown. He’s also a bestselling author of a number of books including one of my top all-time favorites: Deep Work.Given the fact that the fastest way to Optimize your life is to STOP doing things that are sub-optimal AND the fact that (for nearly all of us) our use of technology is the #1 thing that “Needs work!,” I think it’s SUPER important for us to figure out how to best use all the technology available to us WITHOUT becoming lost in a tsunami of inputs.Enter: Our new philosophy of technology use: Digital Minimalism.Enter: My strong recommendation of the book.If you’ve been looking for a coherent approach on how to, as per the sub-title of the book, Choose a Focused Life in a Noisy World, I think you’ll love Digital Minimalism as much as I did.

If you already want to curb the role of digital stuff in your life, you won't get that much value out of this book.Cal makes a great case for WHY to pursue digital minimalism. But I already know why -- my digital addictions are messing up my life. What I wanted to know is HOW.On that, Cal doesn't have as much to say. A few tips -- mostly the "digital declutter," a 30-day moratorium on the digital services in your life -- are pretty useful. For one, it finally convinced me to buy Freedom, an app that regulates your internet use.The rest of the book is thickly padded with anecdotes. They had me flipping pages, wishing we could get to the point.$15 can either get you this book, or half of a year of Freedom. If I could roll back the clock I know where I'd put my money.

This is a great and very readable book that'll probably change how you relate to social media and your phone. You should read it ASAP and I'll be recommending it to everyone I know.Unlike a lot of authors, Cal Newport actually walks the walk too. You don't get tenure at Georgetown AND write a couple bestselling books (with kids) unless you really have your act together. But ... I had two issues with the book. (1) it wasn't organized as well as it could have been, and (2) it contradicted itself in minor ways. The biggest example of the latter is when, early on, Newport bashes on the tips/tricks/hacks ("turn off notifications") that are occasionally recommended to people trying to spend less time with their phone, before later giving many similar tips and tricks (good ones to be sure) himself. The book also has a sort of weird structure -- I figured Part 1 would be the philosophy of it all, where Part 2 would be the implementation, but instead you get the philosophy + the details of the "30 Day Declutter" (which Newport has talked about in interviews leading up to the book) in Part 1, then a detour discussion of leisure, then back to some very good points about the economics of attention + social media to wrap things up.It's all very good, and like I said, you should definitely read it (I could see myself reading it multiple times), but reluctantly I'd say those two things are enough to dock a star.

This is not your typical memoir/redemption story. This is a thriller. Casting aside a format autobiography readers will find familiar, the author does not present himself as the victim who overcomes _________ (insert dramatic life obstacle here: poverty, persecution, abuse, alcoholism, government persecution, etc. . .) Indeed, some of the most poignant and painful personal events of his life are treated as almost incidental. I have come to see this style--writing yourself into the footnotes of your own story--as the mark of someone who has witnessed a lot of human suffering. But this is not a gloom and doom story. With a dry sense of irony, Polishchuk uses his own exploits resisting the Soviet regime to paint a larger picture of human rights abuses and the absurdity of life under communist rule. Being a sarcastic, persecuted minority in a humorless society might have been a recipe for disaster or even death, and indeed, the author was incarcerated, harassed, followed, bugged, and had his ribs busted by the KGB, but none of this stopped him from his pursuit of the truth. I was captivated by the pervasive cat and mouse games, as the author dodged spies, party leaders, finks, and agents, while pursuing the stories of the persecuted and communicating them to the world outside of the USSR. I thought this stuff only happened in the movies! In spite of his self-deprecating style, Polishchuk is transformed from an idealistic journalist with a weak stomach into an unlikely superhero. Or maybe not so unlikely. After all, didn’t Superman work at a newspaper?

This book should be required reading to all high school and college students, and is very highly recommended to people of all ages who may have lingering misconceptions about the illusory virtues of utopian socialist society. These days, when being an aspiring socialist is so much in vogue among a big segment of the population it is imperative that those proudly wearing t-shirts emblazoned with Che’s portrait, and claiming that “real” socialism, i.e. the one they would practice, would be the best, most compassionate, tolerant, just and fair for the “99 percenters”, stop for a moment and read a real first hand account of what their grandiose ideas become when put in practice. The author experienced, and describes in this book, with page-turning, sometimes profound and other times humorous and self deprecating prose, all sides and stages of socialism, from the savage barbarism of Stalin to the “liberal and enlightened” reformism of Gorbachev. The reader gets a vivid account of living under real socialism, where no matter whether you are a peasant from a remote Siberian village wanting to practice an “unapproved” religion, a Jew longing to go to the land of your forefathers, or an elite, loyal, Communist Party member journalist, you are still a slave. You are always dancing on thin ice ready to break at any moment and drown you for sins of uttering a politically incorrect word, having “suspicious” friends, voting the “wrong way”, or just being generally “not sufficiently loyal”.This highly informative book hopefully will help to disabuse those who believe that George Orwell’s “1984”, Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” and Franz Kafka’s “The Trial” are just fancy , entertaining books of dystopian fiction and could never become reality.

Arkady Polishchuk has done the world a great service by memorializing his remarkable journey from an elite Soviet journalist to a rogue dissident who attended and at great risk to himself reported on the Soviet show trials of refuseniks (Russian Jews who tried to emigrate to Israel in the 1970s). Because that wasn't danger enough for Mr. Polishchuk, his memoir also recounts how Mr. Polishchuk then adopted the cause of persecuted Baptists and Pentecostals: Mr. Polishchuk not only befriended them but also traveled to their remote villages to collect firsthand testimonies of the imprisonments, bankrupting fines and debilitating beatings (including of children) imposed or incited by Soviet authorities simply because they wanted to worship and follow Jesus. Mr. Polishchuk's fast-paced memoir demonstrates his impressive memory of the dramatic show trials of refuseniks and the harrowing details of persecution of Baptists and Pentecostals. When the peace, prosperity and religious freedom in the US have dulled our awareness of the horrific persecution that Christians face in much of the world, Mr. Polishchuk provides a timely reminder through his graphic account of the Soviets' mistreatment of Baptists and Pentecostals. May God bless Mr. Polishchuk for his courage in advocating for refuseniks, Baptist and Pentecostals, voluntarily becoming an outcast in the Soviet Union and then suffering exile in the West that separated him from his family, lifelong friends and the refuseniks and Christians he had come to admire deeply.

What new could Polishchuk tell me aboutmy former country - both of us lived thereat the same time, both were journalists. But Dancing on Thin Ice became for mesome kind of a revelation. He was adissident and revealed many disgustingdepths of Mother Ryssia's degradation. The depths that official scribes like meand thousands of my colleagues wereprohibited from writing about. In ourdesire to keep our files clean wepreferred not talk and not to know toomuch about. It was usual self-preservation reflex of usual 'sovok'(dweller of Soviet antiutopia).I hope that the English language readerwould find in this book a plephora ofhorrible examples of sovok life which arenow quickly crawling back to my formercounty.Vlad.

Although I bought this book elsewhere, I wanted a way to express how much I enjoyed it. Enjoyed probably isn't the right word given Polishchuk's journey, but the author's biting wit reminded me of the way I felt reading Catch-22. Polishchuk's laugh-out-loud dark humor made his harrowing story a fast read.

This is the first book by Melanie Dickerson that I have ever read. I LOVED IT! I will definitely be reading her other books! It is a huge plus for me that I still have my “little girl” love of a good fairy tale princess story. It seems to be a stand-alone story even though it is the second book in a series. If characters in this book were in the first one there is enough information about them that I never felt confused as to who each person was.The characters are so wonderfully presented that I was able to connect with them and really understand them. I loved both Rapunzel and Sir Gerek. There are a number of secondary characters that I also felt a connection with.At the same time it was very easy to absolutely hate Mother Gothel and a couple of the other characters, they just oozed with evil intentions. There was no guessing as to who the “bad guys” were in this story. The story development was fantastic. It was definitely a new story for this popular fairy tale character. There were just enough elements that were kept the same so that there was no doubt as to which fairy tale it was taken from.I really enjoyed how much dependence the main characters had on God. I found it to be very refreshing and encouraging.I received a free eBook copy of this novel through NetGalley. I chose to write this review expressing my personal opinion.

As always, Melanie Dickerson delivers on sweet and clean fairytale romance. Set in the fictional town of Hagenheim Germany in 1413, Rapunzel and her Mother have just moved into town. Rapunzel's mother is...off, to put it mildly. She has it in for men and every time one shows an intrest in her daughter, she forces them to move again, which becomes more difficult the older she gets. Rapunzel loves her mother, but it is becoming clear that she needs to step back and make her own life. When she helps an injured knight on the road, she might get her chance, as well as making her greatest dream come a reality – learning to read. The characters in Golden Braid were...okay, I guess. Rapunzel was tough, but sweet as well. However I thought she spent way too much time vacillating back and forth over her decisions, it became slightly tedious to read at times. I could understand her care of her mother and fear of leaving her, but way that woman acted, I couldn't believe she took so long to come to that decision.Gerek I never got particularly attached too. The romance might have beeen sweet, but it fell a bit flat this time. It just wasn't quite up to par with her earlier works. The story was very sweet, though slow, and when the action finally came in, It was slightly difficult to follow.I highly reccomend that you read Dickerson's earlier novel - The Princess Spy - before diving into this one. It will explain a lot, and if you haven't, you might have trouble keeping up with what is happening. Things were challenging enough for me – and I did read Princess Spy first!Safety Rating: please note that it has beeen a while since I read this book and though I hope I have everything listed below, it is possible some details have been forgotten.Romance: Clean. A villain did attempt to attack a girl, but nothing came of itDrinking/drugs: none I recall.Language: cleanViolence: mild fighting, a few injuries/broken bones, and the aforementioned attack.

I mean I knew reading this book that it was a retelling of Repunzal so I knew that somehow she was the Duke's Daughter... duh.. it's obvious, but I was completely astounded as to how Melanie Dickerson made the reunion happen. It was so beautiful!! I cried and got all shivery by the feelings exchanged and the love shared. There was such wise advice given to her ( Repunzal ) by Lady Rose in the book and I found myself nodding with the truth of it. This is the most biblically profound book that I've read by Mrs Dickerson and I appreciated that. ( However, the Captive Maiden with forever be my favourite in this series.... 😊 )The description was as charming as ever, but I did find the book a little slowly paced in the beginning. It came out wonderful though and I am once again reminded of why Mrs Dickerson is my favorite author!Repunzal ~ I cried right along with her... I completely understand being one of the more emotional girls around. Plus the story of Repunzal has always been my second favorite story. Her hair was probably my favorite part of her features because I've always admired long hair, and the fact that it was blond. I loved [ although hated. ( .. ironically ) ] that she was so well guarded in her upbringing that men are dangerous. There was a good and bad side to that, but anyways... I liked that it was mentioned.Gerik ~ I have to say he is one of my favorite male lovers... ( although Valten and Collin are competing with him for first on my list ) Definitely more of a scary but sensitive guy.... which is why I appreciate him so much. I loved his dark hair and the way he tried to hide his love for Repunzal....( she was just so innocent! )This series has me all shivery and excited!! I can't wait to find out how it continues and who marries who and so forth... but now my legs are shaking!! These have got to be the best romance books I've read because the family just keeps growing and Duke William... he is such a good father! *beams* Anyways... now I have to have all of them in easy reach so I can reread them any time... now I'm rambling.*cough* Let me make this clear... my review could have been done in fewer words... Pick / This / Book / Up ...... It / Is / So / Perfect .... You / Will / Enjoy ......Trust me. *wink* * wink*
