disappointed because the book was thin and was written for kids. didnt know that, there was no preview or at least it wasnt in my face so bought this book by mistake. also this was a used book from a library

This is an interesting book that shed some light on William Henry Gates. This is a story about the wealthiest individual in the world. Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. He is widely respected in business circles for his intelligence, foresight, and ambition. He is also widely criticized as having built Microsoft's business through unfair, illegal, or anticompetitive business practices. Government authorities in several countries have found some of Microsoft's practices illegal. All this makes the book as interesting read as we learn a lot about this unique individual.Since amassing his fortune, Gates has pursued a number of charity activities, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programmes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His donations have been larger than the gross national product of many small and poor countries.Since Microsoft's founding, Gates has had primary responsibility for Microsoft's product strategy. He has aggressively broadened the company's range of products, and wherever Microsoft has achieved a dominant position he has vigorously defended it. Gates's role at Microsoft for most of its history has been primarily a management and executive role. However, he was an active software developer in the early years, particularly on the company's programming language products.Gates has not generally engaged in conspicuous consumption beyond his lavish home, with its gardens and art collection. Gates also rents or leases a home on Mustique, an exclusive island in the Grenadines. He owns a 300 foot yacht named Ice. In contrast, his former associate Paul Allen has used his wealth in perhaps a more typical manner; owning sports teams, vintage airplanes, and multiple residences. This is a good book that should help the reader learn and understand the remarkable life and success of this man.

I bought this book because its on Bill Gates, and was I disappointed or what? The style of writting is very bad, and suits a small article not a book. It is not a biography at all, but an absurd trick to cash in on Bill Gates' Name. You are much better off reading other books on Microsoft and Bill Gates, which go into at least some details on the events of both the company and the man himself. This book was more like a brief news item. For me it was a waste of money. The only reason I am giving it a one star is because I cannot give it any less.

Needed a short biography for my son to use for a bnook report. This book worked out great. Short, concise, contemporary.

I really enjoyed reading this book - in fact I read the entire thing in one sitting. Bill Gates has led an amazing life and been at the core of the PC revolution. This book covers the basic details of Microsoft's success and Bill Gates' role in this. It also includes a few glimpses of his private life. Fascinating reading, which I recommend to anyone interested in one of the most sucessful men in the US, or interested in an overview of the history of DOS, Windows, and PCs.The book seems to be aimed at the reading level of a teenager, and is not overly detailed. If you want a more thorough history of Microsoft you probably want to look elsewhere. However, this was an enjoyable book about Bill, and is a nice easy read for an adult.

Well done but too basic, this is the Biography Channel program translated to paper.Basically resumes all the public facts nown about the guy.To whom are searching for more detailed bio I recommend still contine searching, which is what I'll do.

Bought this for my Grandson in High School. Helped him get an A for a class project about Bill Gates.

Children can get introductory lesson on history of computers with this book. Has real pictures.

Review

"A gentle story of calm courage and of quiet, trusting perseverance that will comfort readers in their anxious times." -- Kirkus (Kirkus Reviews October 15, 2017)"The team behind If I Had a Little Dream imagines a journey of ocean exploration as a boy and giraffe set off in a small wooden boat. ...Castrillon’s images convey an underlying tranquility that carries readers along with the explorers. It’s a voyage they’ll want to take again. " -- Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly November 13, 2017)"In lilting rhymes and lush, jewel-toned illustrations, Laden and Castrillon deliver an imaginative adventure through stormy seas.... Castrillon’s beautifully surreal artwork is captivating. Each scene is full of imaginative sea creatures, crashing waves, blue-green tendrils of rain, and moonlit skies, all rendered in swirling organic shapes and lines and a dense palette of saturated tones....the artwork is so gorgeous, and the wind-down conclusion, wherein the travelers are welcomed home, might make this a nice pick for bedtime. I’m giving 5 stars because the book has unique (to me) rhyming words and I love the artwork. I am excited to introduce it to my 14-month-old grandson who loves books, and his daddy is an artist. I think this book will definitely intrigue and fascinate our toddler now and years to come. My only “negative” comment is that the colors are not as intense as they are in the photos—both Amazon photo and my own iPhone photo look brighter than the actual book. I’m not a printer, but I feel like they should have used a little more ink. I plan to compare with a book store to see if this is a less expensive version than they sell in the brick and mortar stores. I do see it was manufactured in China; don’t know if that has anything to do with it. So my first impression was a tad disappointment compared to MY expectation. But I suspect this is how the book is intended to be printed. I’m very pleased with the sturdy paper (not cheap, relatively speaking), and the paper is off-white, which may affect the color perception. So, still, all in all, a five-star children’s book.

Absolutely beautiful book. The text is perfectly simple but very descriptive and the illustrations bring the words to life. Great story about adventures and friendship, and returning home with a great story. Not just for kids!!!!

The illustrations are amazing, as other reviewers have noted. The poem/story is gentle and doesn't shy away from using real vocabulary. I've been stocking up on stories that don't have a bad guy or a witch, as my almost-4 yo is going through a phase where she won't touch those. I love the story in this one that starts out as an adventure, moves through a problem, and of course ends with all being well. However, my girl is still a little freaked out by the boy and his giraffe being lost at sea without any grownups.

I was quite excited to find Yellow Kayak at my local library several months ago. I had read wonderful reviews and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Well, it definitely didn’t disappoint! Yellow Kayak is the newest release from the creative team, Nina Laden (author) and Melissa Castrillon (illustrator) who brought us If I Had a Little Dream (Simon and Schuster, 2017). This is the story of a young boy and his beloved giraffe who embark on a seafaring adventure. The story is told in short, melodic phrases that perfectly capture all of the emotions of the journey. Ms. Laden’s ability to tell a deeply touching tale with such limited text is remarkable. Ms. Castillon truly brings the story to life with her eye-popping illustrations. Her appealing use of color, exquisite patterns, and detail leave something new to discover with each reading. This book was quickly added to my “Must Own” list the first time we read it. I purchased the book last week after having only read a library copy. I wasn’t expecting the delightful surprised waiting for me under the dust jacket. The case cover is absolutely breathtaking! This beautiful story of friendship and triumph will delight readers for years to come.

This is my new favorite children’s book writer and illustrator team! The illustrations in this book are fantastic! The quality of this book is wonderful. The cover and dust jacket are beautiful with metallic accents. The pages are nice and thick. The story is written more as a poem. It’s very pleasant to read! Love it!

Such a beautiful book. The story is sweet and there is so much to look at. My kids love it.

Another gray title from Nina Laden! Our 4 year old loves her books and the illustrations are stunning.

Bought as a gift for a new nephew. It is a gorgeous book--good quality and such a cute story!

As others have mentioned, many of these recipes are one's with which many are familiar and they are sort of rich, indulgent foods. I usually like to pick a cookbook and use it for the week as I meal plan, but can't do that with this one. I like how this taught some basics and I could add them to our family's rotation (I'd never made homemade enchiladas before).I think my biggest complaint is that after purchasing her cookbook I read on her blog that Rachel doesn't eat meat and limits her dairy. So I felt a little cheated that these aren't recipes she herself eats. I might be wrong about that. I'm curious to see if her second cookbook is a little more true to life for her.All in all, it's a user friendly cookbook that if you didn't grow up in the kitchen helps one make simple, delicious food. My whole family loves most of the things I've made out of it.

I love this cookbook. I normally don't buy cookbooks because you can find things online so easily, but I really am happy I bought this one. It is a beautiful book full of color and warmth and really makes my want to enjoy the cooking prosses. My favorite thing about it is the leftover chapter and how it refers you back to the page that the original recipe came from. And it really is full of great looking and delusious food. My kids really like the hotdog to taquitos and the whole family likes the bbq root beer chicken. Great job Rachel!

I'm so excited to have this cookbook!! It is gorgeous, full of vibrant and delicious looking pictures, fantastic and easy recipes, and such a great sense of humor and joy. The author Rachel Hollis seems like just the sort of person you would love to be dear friends with: sweet, funny, talented, welcoming, loving, and full of fantastic ideas she'd want you to be part of. I love her novels and I'm super happy that she wrote this beautiful cookbook. Can't wait to try the recipes and tips!!P.S. I LOVE the name of her slow cooker!!! 💝💝💝

This cookbook is great! I love the photos and the step by step instructions. I love how it is organized and separated out. The little sections at the back for each event is so cool! Y'all there is even a section for using up your leftovers! COME ON! I love this cookbook! These recipes are so good. This is one of my favorite cookbooks and for sure a new go to for my regular everyday cooking!

I LOVE this cookbook. First, I'm a big fan of Rachel and TheChicSite.com, so I knew the recipes would be great. But, when I got it and started making them, I was surprised at the variety, great categories and the tips she throws in there to make everything turn out great. Plus, my family has loved every recipe I've made them.I gave it as a gift to 4 of my friends and they love it too!

Admittedly, I'm not a cookbook gal. I purchased this because I love Rachel and wanted to support her. But even it weren't for that reason, I truly would've enjoyed this book! It's more than a cookbook. It offers so many great hosting tips. Like, real ones that you can actually DO. My mom is a cookbook and hostess phenom. She started flipping through it the other day and fell in love. To dissuade her from stealing MY copy, I promised her one for Christmas. This is a great buy whether you're new to cookbooks or are an avid collector. Highly recommended!

Love that the pages are in color, beautifully showing off the recipes!I love the new twist on comfort food this one has! Rachel Hollis is one of my favorite blogs to follow, she always has great ideas or recipes! Can't wait to try more of the foods listed in this cookbook, I've gone through and marked all the pages I need to try.

The photos are so crisp and make the final product easy to understand. This cookbook includes simple and easy-to-follow recipes that feel like they could have come from your mom or aunt. Not too many frills and ingredients are easy to find in any part of the country. I LOVE it and have already made 3 recipes.

Review

Leonel is one of the foremost Anglican liturgists and those who heard him lecture at his beloved Seabury-Western Seminary in Evanston, Illinois are richly blessed. Anyone wanting to know the origin and the raison d'être of any action or symbol will find their answer here. (Church of Ireland Education)This volume is a companion to the late Howard E. Galley's The Ceremonies of the Eucharist: A Guide to Celebration. . . . Galley's work is virtually essential for anyone involved in planning and executing eucharistic and baptismal liturgies. Professor Mitchell has done an equal service in writing this companion volume, which he dedicates to Galley. . . . Like Galley, Mitchell explains the whys and wherefores of his directions and suggestions, which allows the reader to evaluate, select and (important in a parish context) explain the reasons for celebrating in a particular way. . . . The greatest value of the book is the pastoral wisdom Mitchell offers. For all his historical knowledge, what he says is always directed to the present day; despite the fact that his career centered in a seminary chapel, his concern here is always with the diverse range of Episcopal parishes. (Anglican Theological Review)In this instant age we find ourselves in, we find it more familiar to mark what we do by the yardstick called experience rather than [by] substance and meaning. For ALL Christians, these days and the events that surround them are the heart of what it means to be a Christian. These are the ‘high holy days,' and this book will help congregations, worship leaders and individual members rediscover what this faith tradition is all about. (Richard B. Gilbert, Executive Director of The World Pastoral Care Center)

This book lays out a very detailed plan for all aspects of services during Lent, Holy Week, Easter day and the Easter season. As an altar guild directress, I have found it invaluable in answering my questions about ceremony. One goes along Sunday after Sunday throughout the year, and then up come these seasons and there's always a nagging "How do we...?" question that comes up in my mind, even though I thought I made meticulous notes the previous year. But, this is more than just a guide that can assist an altar guild; it covers every aspect of the services and would be most helpful to anyone who is involved with the ceremonies of the church. Note that it is written as a guide to ceremony in the Episcopal Church, so it would not be helpful to everyone, though it might make for interesting reading to see how it's done in Episcopal churches. It is a companion to the work done by the wonderful Howard Galley, whose name is spoken in reverent tones by many of us who love traditional liturgy and who love to have things done 'the right way.' Of course, I realize that Jesus Christ did not author this, nor would I elevate it to the status of works inspired by God, such as the Holy Bible. And I do know that God does not care how we worship. God just wants us to show up. But, nevertheless, when one is doing something, it's nice to have a guide to tell you the 'right' way, and then one can deviate from that if one so chooses. Me, I don't much like the deviations, but maybe that's because I'm old! And maybe I'm lazy, and just want someone to tell me what to do so I don't have to figure it all out by myself.

This book provides step-by-step guides to the liturgical services of Lent, Holy Week and Easter. It is a companion to Howard Galley's excellent resource "Ceremonies of the Eucharist." Mitchell writes for anyone involved in leading, planning and participating in the services in Episcopal/Anglican churches. The book assumes a medium-size parish with typical resources; however, the guidelines are useful for churches of any size and that meet in any type of facility, as the instructions can be modified to suit tastes and resources.Like Galley, Mitchell conveys the attitude that if liturgy is worth doing then it is worth doing very well. His writing will help readers make the best of important services in the church year. For Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, & Holy Saturday), Easter Vigil and the Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season Mitchell offers detailed instructions. He includes optional details, history and theology behind the liturgy. The details will help churches start a service tradition like Maundy Thursday for the first time or improve current tradition.I recommend that Episcopal/Anglican leaders add this book to their libraries and refer to it when planning these services.

I would have preferred it to be the same size as the others in the series as it doesn't fit the shelf easily.

it is an invaluable aid to planning and being ready for Lent, Holy, Week, and beyond in both large and small parishes. It is thorough and explicit and a complete must for every liturgical planner for these liturgies.

I thought i was getting something different, this is how to do a Lent service, i was wanting the meaning of the Lent Service

Review

New York Times Book Review Editor's ChoiceWall Street Journal“Shelby Steele is one of the very few writers able to tell home truths about the plight of black Americans.... In Shame, an essay on the political polarization of our country and on the want of progress among black Americans, he has produced his most complex and challenging work.... The irony here is that Shelby Steele might just be a Tom of a different kind—a black Tom Paine, whose 21st-century common sense could go a long way to bringing his people out of their by now historical doldrums.”New York Times Book Review“A spirited polemic…Steele delivers this message in an ardent, readable style…Steele…speaks with passion, eloquence and unremitting honesty.”Publishers Weekly, starred review“This timely critique warrants attention from anyone troubled by the persistence of racial discord in American life, from Selma to Ferguson.”Kirkus“A conservative analysis of political polarization and race relations in America, more thoughtful and less vitriolic than most volleys from either side.”Claremont Review of Books“Steele may well have given us his most important book yet.”

Steele is a favorite writer of mine, so I've been waiting for this book for some time. For those familiar with Steele, you know what to expect: a literary and theoretical reflection on the predicament of race in the United States. For better or worse - and sometimes both - Steele doesn't try to convince us as much with fact as by offering us an interpretation of the American psyche. This book, of course, is about more than the issue of race. Here, Steele tries to offer a framework for understanding the difference between the 'liberal' and 'conservative' mind. For my part, I think this is too lofty an ambition for his argument. Bu, like Steele's other works, it is challenging and thought provoking nonetheless.Steele's idea is that in the 1960's, many of the hypocrisies of the United States become laid bare: a society partly build on racism and sexism but professing to believe in equality of opportunity, that professed liberty for all but inserted itself in the affairs of other nations. In acknowledging these hypocrisies - and Steele thinks the acknowledgement was appropriate - belief in the United States and its values lost the moral authority it once had. To fill the void, that moral authority was claimed by those who challenged the values of the United States. Instead of making capitalism more just, overthrow it. Instead of civil rights movement's goal of integration into American (white) society, the Black Power movement would challenge whether that society was even worth joining.Steele does not suggest that America's loss of moral authority was wrong. But he does argue that it came with some very negative consequences, including the eschewing of freedom in favor of petitioning governments to create fairness and equity for us. Where Steele believes the proper reaction to racism and sexism was to allow oppressed groups freedom to work their way up, the new liberalism in some way chose to switch oppressors: instead of allowing blacks, women, gays, and other groups to be oppressed by discrimination, they would now be oppressed by governments who would insist that these groups couldn't do much without government help. And the tragic benefit of this new liberalism was that the former oppressors (whites, males, straights) could now atone for their sins by favoring policies like 'diversity' quotas and the like that wouldn't so much help these newly free groups, but would make everyone feel better about themselves. Two brief criticisms: first, I think Steele's thesis - that this can explain the core differences between liberals and conservatives - is probably too grand. It explains some differences, but not others. (Does it explain, for instance, why conservatives tend to be pro-life and liberals pro-choice, or the different stances on firearm regulation?) Second - and this is somewhat typical of Steele - he doesn't tend to seriously entertain counterarguments. Steele's belief in a laissez-faire conservatism - government will leave you alone, and that is enough - will be interpreted by some (generally on the left) as ignoring the reality of "structural racism." How, they will ask, do blacks and whites have equal opportunity when blacks get paid much less on average than whites, even for similar jobs, or when blacks are more likely to be arrested, injured, and even killed than whites by a difference of 8 to 1? I don't doubt that Steele could answer these questions, but he doesn't seem to seriously consider that they need addressing. All in all, though, Steele is a joy to read, and for my part, many of his interpretations of the American psyche make sense and ring true. If you haven't read him, you need to.

As a conservative libertarian (or vice versa) I have to give it to the liberals for having accomplished the extraordinary task of turning conservatism into a counterculture “movement.” This is just one of the many gems I gleaned from Shelby Steele’s new and immensely important work: Shame: How America’s Past Sins Have Polarized Our Country.I’ve always known I was unequivocally right about Americans being better off with individual liberty, which is superior to group governmental dependence—modern liberalism, even in spite of the national hypocrisy of slavery. Still, it’s a difficult issue to corral into a valid, intellectually sound context and defense. In Shame, Shelby Steele has done this. In fact, this book is written with a profound yet approachable genius that makes me feel good about myself for being able to recognize it.Although this book deserves more than a “nutshell” reduction, I hope I can do the gist of the basic ideas Steele conveyed justice—but no, not social justice. Steele explains the accomplishments of the 50s and 60s civil rights movement, which still clung to an American ideal, if not actualization, of liberty for all, which was the ultimate goal—achievable because, unlike anywhere else in human history, it had been written down in a nation’s founding documents. He defines, “Liberalism in the twenty-first century is, for the most part, a moral manipulation that exaggerates inequity and unfairness in American life in order to justify overreaching public policies and programs.”Steele writes that those disaffected, many of them young people, following the victory of the Civil Rights movement, could not see a place for them in the past or in the future. They needed to view America as “characterologically” flawed. The American character was irretrievably evil—it could not be redeemed; it had to be overthrown. The author states that liberals thought they couldn’t legitimately go back, because they had won (although many refuse to admit it) the civil rights “war,” and they didn’t want to go forward to deal with having to attempt achieving success within a context of individual liberty and without government entitlements. Therefore, the new liberals chose, “a strong sense of placelessness within the group, when both past and future seem impossible.”Modern liberals, Steele argues, hold that the evils of America’s past are permanently etched in the American character and cannot be reformed; instead; they argue for a revolution to overthrow American traditions and values.Steele recounts a 1970 visit to Africa with his wife. Searching for validation of his liberal ideals, Steele, instead, found himself beginning to look toward traditional, capitalist America as the best hope for black—for human—flourishing. While in the company of exiled American Black Panthers he befriends, and is befriended by, one of their leaders. Steele realizes that the most significant thing about his new Black Panther “friend” is the degree to which he seems to miss America—San Francisco in particular. Like the Islamists of today, the Panthers seemed to eschew a culture of whose society and technology they appreciated so much. Today, Islamists utilize all of the technology, which would not exist were it not for Western science and culture.Steele encapsulates the modern liberal’s vision of a new America, “This is a grand and amorphous vision, perhaps even a little manic. It is a liberalism that doesn’t wan the hard-earned and unglamorous fairness that struggling with demanding principles would bring. Instead, it chases utopian projections of fairness like “diversity,” “gender equality,” “sustainability,” “social justice,” “ecological balance,” and “multiculturalism”—vague projections that ring of good intentions for future at the same time that they admonish America for its past.”He talks about being booed while giving a talk simply for bringing up the notion of American Exceptionalism. So entrenched in the new lexicon of liberalism, those who booed could not conceive of a definition different from the one inculcated in them by the liberal elites. Steele argues that America being exceptional does not mean Americans, individually, are “better” than other peoples, or even that America is better than other nations. He argues that America is simple different and has more capabilities to conduct global actions due to its unrivaled success and status in the world, which necessitates it exert its influence in the world—for good—for liberty.I only found disagreement, though mild, with regard to Steele’s views of “racist” jokes. He seemed a bit temperamental or thin-skinned in his examination, although he covered it only briefly. However, my experience, even growing up very poor as a white male in a single-parent household in the late 60s early 70s is not Steele’s experience. Still, I do feel the impulse to react. I think that, in this instance, degree comes into play. While there are definitely over-the-top, brutally “racist” “jokes,” some liberals have swayed so far into political correctness that what they consider “racist,” reasonable people do not. For example, Clint Eastwood’s movie, Grand Torino, was considered quite racist by many simple because of the terms used within the movie. I, on the other hand, consider it one of the least racist movies I’ve ever seen. In fact, it is a grand lesson in tolerance and reason. Years ago a civilian administrator in the Seattle Police Department actually deemed the term, “White Out,” referring to the correction fluid product, as “racist.”When I was a kid, I grew up in a working class New England mill/farm town. The predominate ethnic groups were Irish, French and Polish (with significant German and low Italian populations). Yes, there were three separate Catholic churches in this little town. I liked to say we were three peoples separated by a common religion. I had friends from each of these other groups, some of whom I remain friends to this day, one of whom, Polish, is my son’s godfather. We often disparaged each others ethnic groups (my Polish friends absorbing the greatest brunt), but it was done with affection and humor. Today’s public school teachers would form a task force in order to deal with such blatant “racism.” However, none of us took exceptional offense; we knew it was done in good nature. We all still hung out and went to each others annual church picnics. In the end, what took primacy was that we were all unequivocally American.I convey these anecdotes not because they are directly related to Shelby Steele’s new book but to demonstrate what such a book inspires people to think about. Steele talks about how Americans used to proceed, despite other differences, upon a common premise of American “goodness.” Today, he posits, we have two competing political factions who don’t simple feel the other is wrong but is evil and needs to be eradicated.I went to a party at a firefighter friend’s place back when George Bush was still president and got a firsthand lesson in what Steele contends. The hostess was a public school teacher who had invited many of her teacher co-workers. Since my wife was the firefighter in the family, I was relegated to the spouses, of which I was the only male. Being a cop, they were asking me cop questions when the conversation turned to politics. Someone made a disparaging comment about President Bush. I simply said, “I like some of the things George Bush does.”Not that I loved him or wanted to bear his children, just that I thought he did some good things. Well, like the quintessential B-Western, barroom brawl scene, initially, you could hear a proverbial pin drop.” These teachers, all of whom were women, looked at me as if I’d grown a second head. The hostess looked at me and said, straight-faced, “Nothing George Bush has ever done has been good—nothing!” I looked at the other stern-faced, teachers, waiting for the laughter—it was not a joke.It is episodes in life such as this that makes Steele’s new book so valuable. He explains how and why liberals think the way they do and why conservatives react as they do. He demystifies the political division in the modern context and by so doing allows conservatives to assess the best ways to address the attacks made by liberals. As for the liberal, it may allow the intellectually honest of them (as Shelby Steele himself once was) to engage in critical thinking about their own commitment to modern liberalism.

Faerie Knitting: 14 Tales of Love and Magic, by Alice Hoffman Lisa Hoffman

Review

“A beautiful book that takes flight and transports knitting to a magical place. I was enchanted by it all.” (―Nicky Epstein, knitwear designer and author of Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Flowers; Knitting on the Edge; Knitting Over the Edge; and Knitting Beyond the Edge)“The Hoffmans have invited us to enter a magical world where adventures are enchanting, mysteries abound, and knitting projects and dreams come true.” (Shirley Paden, knitwear designer and author of Knitwear Design Workshop)“Faerie Knitting celebrates how stories and knitting can work their magic and save our lives. From the first page, I was enchanted.”  (Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle and editor of Knitting Yarns and Knitting Pearls)“What a lovely gift, especially for the dreamy knitter as comfortable in the world of fantasy as she is in the world of wool.” (Vogue Knitting)"In this unusual volume, bestselling novelist Alice Hoffman and knitwear designer Lisa Hoffman take knitting into the worlds of fairy tale, magic, and fantasy. I … was intrigued by the imaginative ferment of these creative cousins. (Also: the knitting designs are beautiful.)" (Mason Dixon Knitting)"Like something … from under the Christmas Tree." (Knitting I Love (YouTube))"The stories tell of the power of women and power of knitting, the magic of making and storytelling in ways that many knitters — and writers who knit, and knitters who write — will find familiar. It’s an interesting concept and the stories and knitting patterns are enjoyable alone and in combination." (Craft Gossip)"The book is beautifully photographed … with easy to navigate charts, guides, and diagrams to make things extra helpful. One thing I love about this book is the sheer variety of projects … Each story in the book blends nicely with the accompanying project and reads just like a classic storybook … feels like a special vintage book. One of my favorite projects from the book is … the Blue Heron Shawl, which also graces the cover.  I'm such a shawl fanatic and this one is absolutely exquisite." (Fiber Flux)"When Alice Hoffman – the Alice Hoffman … releases a new book with her cousin, master knitter Lisa Hoffman, you sit up and pay attention … With patterns like the ‘Amulet Necklace’ and ‘Witch Gloves,’ it’s just in time for Halloween. Perhaps weaving patterns from the Hoffman cousins’ book may be just the thing to unspool a bout of writer’s block this winter." (Writer Magazine)"This book is a delightful collaboration …with strong girls and women at their center. The patterns and stories mesh wonderfully each enriching the other to create a timeless collection. The photography lifts the book to an otherworldly realm, full of mist and magic. This is an imaginative book that can be used to knit or read some enchantment into your life." (Knitty.com)

Not really items I’d want to make. I bought this based on the glowing reviews, but I have to be honest, if I’d seen these I’d have skipped it. Either the project is too complex and time consuming ( like the shawl with the basket weave texture or cabled throw) or its nothing I want to make. Leg warmers from delicate yarn to wear on bare legs? Maybe if you’re one of those Hara juka cosplayers. A hood with a cape would be great for a child, or a milk maid costume. I really like the author Alice Hoffman so I ordered this. I was expecting more sophisticated looking patterns that might be worn on Outlander, which could easily transition to a modern girls wardrobe. Most of these feel like costume pieces. Like how would one style the cabled apron? I’m shipping this back, it’s not really for me, but it’s a pretty book.

I found this to be delightful! These stories started out as columns in Faerie Magazine, so they're short and sweet. The patterns all appeal to the sort of people who would enjoy Faerie Magazine, those who love fae, magick, and whimsy. I like Alice Hoffman's writing and the stories are in her style.

I found this book to be very disappointing. The stories were all very short and simplistic. The associated patterns were for small items: cowls, mitts, an amulet necklace, nothing really substantial with the exception of the heron shawl. The shawl was larger, but the pattern was simple. I guess it's okay for beginning knitters. However, given the authors, I guess I was expecting more.

I adore Alice Hoffman's books, but these stories are oversimplified. I imagine they'd serve a valuable purpose as (very) quick bedtime stories. As for the knitting patterns, it's tough to gather a collection to please the masses. Only one project appealed to me enough to consider grabbing needles & fiber, the Heron Shawl. The book itself is lovely with the linen cover.

Not impressed, which is unfortunate. I was very excited about this coming out but was less than thrilled with the end product. There is only one item that I am interested in making, the gauntlets. The other items seem less than dreamy, mythical, magical, or fairy-like.

I read this book on vacation in about an hour. The stories were well written, short and sweet. I’m not a knitter so I skipped the patterns but enjoyed the pictures. I actually purchased the hardcover of this book for a friend who does knit. I’m not sure she’s a reader but the stories are short and enchanting. Love Alice Hoffman books...CH

I waited and bought this for myself for my birthday. Starting on my birthday night, I read one story and the subsequent knitting pattern every night until I finished all the stories and then turned around and started over.Love the stories with the close relation to nature and knitting. Even though most of the patterns are too hard for this beginning knitter, I enjoyed reading the patterns and the different techniques. The photos were also lovely. This book is a real treasure that I plan on leaving on my Kindle to read again for a long time.

As stated in another review, the stories are short and the patterns are beginner/intermediate for the most part, but I love the idea and hope they will do more books like this. It's a brilliant idea!
