Review

“A beautiful book that takes flight and transports knitting to a magical place. I was enchanted by it all.” (―Nicky Epstein, knitwear designer and author of Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Flowers; Knitting on the Edge; Knitting Over the Edge; and Knitting Beyond the Edge)“The Hoffmans have invited us to enter a magical world where adventures are enchanting, mysteries abound, and knitting projects and dreams come true.” (Shirley Paden, knitwear designer and author of Knitwear Design Workshop)“Faerie Knitting celebrates how stories and knitting can work their magic and save our lives. From the first page, I was enchanted.”  (Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle and editor of Knitting Yarns and Knitting Pearls)“What a lovely gift, especially for the dreamy knitter as comfortable in the world of fantasy as she is in the world of wool.” (Vogue Knitting)"In this unusual volume, bestselling novelist Alice Hoffman and knitwear designer Lisa Hoffman take knitting into the worlds of fairy tale, magic, and fantasy. I … was intrigued by the imaginative ferment of these creative cousins. (Also: the knitting designs are beautiful.)" (Mason Dixon Knitting)"Like something … from under the Christmas Tree." (Knitting I Love (YouTube))"The stories tell of the power of women and power of knitting, the magic of making and storytelling in ways that many knitters — and writers who knit, and knitters who write — will find familiar. It’s an interesting concept and the stories and knitting patterns are enjoyable alone and in combination." (Craft Gossip)"The book is beautifully photographed … with easy to navigate charts, guides, and diagrams to make things extra helpful. One thing I love about this book is the sheer variety of projects … Each story in the book blends nicely with the accompanying project and reads just like a classic storybook … feels like a special vintage book. One of my favorite projects from the book is … the Blue Heron Shawl, which also graces the cover.  I'm such a shawl fanatic and this one is absolutely exquisite." (Fiber Flux)"When Alice Hoffman – the Alice Hoffman … releases a new book with her cousin, master knitter Lisa Hoffman, you sit up and pay attention … With patterns like the ‘Amulet Necklace’ and ‘Witch Gloves,’ it’s just in time for Halloween. Perhaps weaving patterns from the Hoffman cousins’ book may be just the thing to unspool a bout of writer’s block this winter." (Writer Magazine)"This book is a delightful collaboration …with strong girls and women at their center. The patterns and stories mesh wonderfully each enriching the other to create a timeless collection. The photography lifts the book to an otherworldly realm, full of mist and magic. This is an imaginative book that can be used to knit or read some enchantment into your life." (Knitty.com)

Not really items I’d want to make. I bought this based on the glowing reviews, but I have to be honest, if I’d seen these I’d have skipped it. Either the project is too complex and time consuming ( like the shawl with the basket weave texture or cabled throw) or its nothing I want to make. Leg warmers from delicate yarn to wear on bare legs? Maybe if you’re one of those Hara juka cosplayers. A hood with a cape would be great for a child, or a milk maid costume. I really like the author Alice Hoffman so I ordered this. I was expecting more sophisticated looking patterns that might be worn on Outlander, which could easily transition to a modern girls wardrobe. Most of these feel like costume pieces. Like how would one style the cabled apron? I’m shipping this back, it’s not really for me, but it’s a pretty book.

I found this to be delightful! These stories started out as columns in Faerie Magazine, so they're short and sweet. The patterns all appeal to the sort of people who would enjoy Faerie Magazine, those who love fae, magick, and whimsy. I like Alice Hoffman's writing and the stories are in her style.

I found this book to be very disappointing. The stories were all very short and simplistic. The associated patterns were for small items: cowls, mitts, an amulet necklace, nothing really substantial with the exception of the heron shawl. The shawl was larger, but the pattern was simple. I guess it's okay for beginning knitters. However, given the authors, I guess I was expecting more.

I adore Alice Hoffman's books, but these stories are oversimplified. I imagine they'd serve a valuable purpose as (very) quick bedtime stories. As for the knitting patterns, it's tough to gather a collection to please the masses. Only one project appealed to me enough to consider grabbing needles & fiber, the Heron Shawl. The book itself is lovely with the linen cover.

Not impressed, which is unfortunate. I was very excited about this coming out but was less than thrilled with the end product. There is only one item that I am interested in making, the gauntlets. The other items seem less than dreamy, mythical, magical, or fairy-like.

I read this book on vacation in about an hour. The stories were well written, short and sweet. I’m not a knitter so I skipped the patterns but enjoyed the pictures. I actually purchased the hardcover of this book for a friend who does knit. I’m not sure she’s a reader but the stories are short and enchanting. Love Alice Hoffman books...CH

I waited and bought this for myself for my birthday. Starting on my birthday night, I read one story and the subsequent knitting pattern every night until I finished all the stories and then turned around and started over.Love the stories with the close relation to nature and knitting. Even though most of the patterns are too hard for this beginning knitter, I enjoyed reading the patterns and the different techniques. The photos were also lovely. This book is a real treasure that I plan on leaving on my Kindle to read again for a long time.

As stated in another review, the stories are short and the patterns are beginner/intermediate for the most part, but I love the idea and hope they will do more books like this. It's a brilliant idea!
