Like a bad History Channel show, this book panders to the sensationalist, tabloid mindset audience. Prof Cooney is far too fond of conspiracies within the royal court and hyping the role of the harem as sexual stimulation for the king. She constantly presents her conjectures as established facts; and while it is almost impossible to know the thoughts and mindset of people so far removed from the present, Prof Cooney repeatedly makes statements about what these ancient people thought. For example, she refers to the early Dynastic era court of Merneith as "bloodthirsty", and claims that royal males were sacrificed after the new Pharaoh was chosen - despite no concrete proof whatsoever that any of the male human sacrifices were of royal blood.It would take far too long to list all the items in this book that hit the wrong note with me - and there were quite a lot of them! - but I feel a need to mention a few of the more egregious. The reign of Hatshepsut and the Amarna Period are my own areas of special interest, and therefore rang the most false. That a ruler as evidently competent as Hatshepsut had to "buy off" the officials of the court and temple in order to remain in power is frankly insulting. And claiming that she was "lost to cultural memory" when girls of later generations were named Maatkare - her kingly throne name, NOT her personal name - overlooks the evidence to the contrary. Thutmose IV - the grandson of Thutmose III, who destroyed many of her monuments - held her in such high regard that he added his own name to an offering bowl she had dedicated where there was room, instead of removing hers, even adding the respectful title of Osiris to her name.And then there are the blatant math errors in the chapter on Nefertiti! Prof Cooney states that Akhenaten was 30 when he became king and married the teenage Nefertiti. She then claims that Tutankhamon was the son of Akhenaten by one of Nefertiti's daughters. Most of those girls were nowhere near childbearing age by the end of the reign; while the eldest could have been, there was not enough time for her to have borne a child and for that child to have been as old as Tutankhamon was when he became king.The constant emphasis on conspiracies and politicking within the court and the sexual role of the harem in each and every chapter gets old fast. Cooney examines the trajectories of six female pharaohs from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolmiac period: Merineth, Neferusobek, Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Tawosret, and Cleopatra, discussing the similarities of their experiences as kings and drawing parallels to wider truths and similarities of women and power - and patriarchy - today.Most of these women were "placeholders" for men - tolerated as such so long as they did not "overstep" traditional gender roles as protectors of younger (male, of course) successors - essentially playing the part of the protective mother who has no interest in actually being in power. That these women also tended to act as regents during periods of upheaval and rapid political change is, Cooney argues, also part of the reason they were permitted to wield such authority.The exceptions - Hatshepsut and Cleopatra (and, perhaps, Nefertiti) - were of particular interest, as much for how these women took and held power as for how they were (and are) remembered after their deaths. In short, Hatshepsut's monuments and name was largely erased (her name, like that of Smenkhare) removed from the king's list ostensibly because they reached too far as women. Cooney's discussion of Nefertiti - and whether she is or is not Smenkhare, and the subsequent end of the 18th dynasty - was fascinating even in its brevity. For those unfamiliar, among Egyptologists, the identity of Smenkhare specifically, and the details of how Ay and Horemheb came to power is one of tremendous controversy.The real heart of the book, however, is the connections between the ancient past and the present. This is, after all, the whole point of studying history. Cooney does a masterful job of dating parallels between these powerful women and contemporary politics. That some, such as Benazir Bhutto, have learned how to align themselves with men of the past as they stake their political claim and therefore be accepted, as contrasted with Hillary Clinton who boldly sought to break away from the patriarchal power structure when she proclaimed, "... I challenge assumptions about women. I do make some people uncomfortable, which I'm well aware of, but that's just part of coming to grips with what I believe is still one of the most important pieces of unfinished business in human history - empowering women to stand up for themselves." That we in the early 21st century are seeing women in increasing numbers challenge traditional power structures in the workplace, in the military and in politics is both reason for celebration and, given the lessons of history, reason for concern, as power does not easily or readily concede.Come readers may take issue with the strong connections Cooney makes about women and power and the strong, bright lines that connect attitudes across time around the issue. I found her evidence compelling, her reasoning unassailable, and her writing clear. I very much enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

Very good to help aspiring nurses select their path early in their training and education to avoid unnecessary (but often required) repeat courses which would cost more, such as in a career specialty change.

This book is more like a pamphlet--very thin, with only cursory descriptions. I am very disappointed in it, and also that I paid $6 for it. Don't bother.

I enjoy having a ton of options in one place. Easy to read and comprehend. The detail wasn’t bad. I’d like some more credible references added to the end for further research, and a section on nurses in administrative roles would be appreciated.

Going into the field there is a lot more information available beyond this book but it is a great foundation to get you thinking about the nursing path that you may want to pursue

I really enjoyed this book. I hate to sound cliche but....I had a hard time putting it down. The crime aspect is well thought out and kept me engrossed and to be blunt...it is sexy as hell (and that really kept me engrossed). The squirming sexual "awakening" of Toni was fun to follow. I don't like reviews that give away the entire plot so suffice to say....I really enjoyed it, it was a fun read, and I recommend it!

This is my first book by this author and I am happy I have found her work. This interesting story has appealing characters and is paced so well I didn't want to put it down. Highly recommended.

This historical novel by Noah Gordon is up to the level of his masterful book "The Physician". In this novel we follow the steps of a young jewish silversmith apprentice from the streets of Toledo to his mature age as a physician in Zaragoza.The background of this historical novel is the expulsion of jews from Spain in 1492, one of Spain's greatest historical blunders, and the start of the Spanish in 1478. Very well written, it is a great work, and a pleasure to read.

Once I'd read "The Physician" and "Shaman" I was struck with a massive desire to read all of Noah Gordon's books. This plan started going down hill immediately with "Choices" the last in the Cole trilogy. I had high hopes for "The Last Jew" though.Unfortunately they turned out to be a little premature. It's really a shame because the premis was so good. It's 1892 and all Jews have been ordered out of Spain. But Yonah and his father Helkias are delayed, hoping to collect an outstanding debt for Helkias' fine silverwork owed by an unscrupulous nobleman. This delay proves to be fatal when a man from the families past-who was somehow involved in the earlier murder of Yonah's brother becomes involved and soon Yonah find himself totally alone-as the last Jew in Spain.The main problem with this book is that it is really, really fragmented. Yonah wanders constantly to avoid the inquisition and so none of the other characters or settings last that long. The back of the book makes it sound like the novel contains some epic love story but its completely false advertising. The truth is no character is around for more than a couple of chapters.The other main problem is that Yonah is essentially the same character as Rob in "The Physician", Rob in "Shaman" and Shaman in "Shaman." Not only are these four characters all the same physically, but their mental and emotional states are remarkably similar. Within a series that's about several generations of family similarities like that might be ok, but if all the books an author writes have such non-diverse characters it just shows a lack of imagination.All in all I might have liked this book better had I not read other Noah Gordon books first. His writing style and pure use of language is wonderful as always, but with the fragmentation and oh-so familiar characters it just couldn't hold up to his better books.Three stars.

Fans of Noah Gordon will find much comfort in this book. He returns to familiar themes and rhythms in The Last Jew. Stylistically he borrows much from both master works The Physician and Shaman. While the themes and rhythms of the book are familiar Gordon brings forth a compelling new story that entertains from beginning to end. Perhaps Gordon is somewhat of a nomad, for it is the wanderings of his characters that they take form.The Last Jew paints a vivid picture of one of Christianity's darker moments, yet in the end shows how the goodness of a person can triumph over even the greatest obstacles. Yonah Toledano discovers the cruelty of Christianity as an institution bent to serve other purposes. He discovers the true Christianity in the hearts of those who take him into their lives. The irony of the book lies in the affirmation of all faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam through the instrument of the Spanish Inquisition.The book is about the triumph of the soul, about keeping faith and promises and about never forgetting whom you are. Shorter by a great deal than The Physician and Shaman, it would be an excellent primer for the new Gordon reader before tackling the more complex but equaling compelling trilogy.Thank you Mr. Gordon.

Loved it. Written beautifully and a very engrossing story. I learned a great deal from the author and I am going to read his other books. It was in depth and I was with Yonah as he went from place to place.

This is a timeless novel. It will be read from here to eternity. A great portrayal of Spain in the 1400s. The mini plots are woven in from one setting to the other. Truly outstanding.

I had the advantage of traveling in Spain and Portugal while reading this book so it really struck a chord with me as I was visiting all of the places the story took place in. Not having had occasion to think much about this time in Jewish history, I found the history of it all very interesting as well as sad to learn of so much suffering, again, all done in the name of religion. A very good read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction and I highly recommend this book.

if you're a noah gordon fan(shaman...the physician--also an excellent film with ben kingsley...), then this will not disappoint...epic storytelling a la hidalgo...period piece mixing in elements of the plague, the Inquisition and Middle Age medicine...that and soooomuch more....what you'd expect from a noah gordon work...EASY to recommend to you, the faithful...
