After a trip to Haifa and Akka, I really enjoyed reading this book and having it add "color" to my experience there. History in general is amazing! And it is fascinating to read through this book and think of standing at the exact same spots and seeing what the author saw-- or didn't see-- all so many years ago. There was one review I read that didn't particularly like the book because it had what that person called too much backbiting. I have to disagree on two points. One, this is the story told through the authors eyes as he witnessed it. Occasionally he adds a few adjectives here and there to describe people and situations, but that only leads me to the next point. Two, these are his memories and not an official publication issued for study. Fortunately, I don't keep a diary to be read long after I am gone--haha! But if I did, I would write just as the author has--with honest thoughts and emotions and the raw telling of events as they seemed in the moment! One of the things I learned in college was if you really want to experience history, read diaries-- not His Story books! However, if I were the editor, I might have changed all the chapter endings that end with something like "I will tell more about that later..." Either tell the whole story of don't is my mantra! But that style of writing was also not particularly unusual for the time period that this book was written. Not to be over zealous, I can't help but have warm feelings towards Abdu'l-Baha. Reading this first-hand account of time spent with him only underscores that feeling. If ever there was a person who had cause to be bitter about life, it was Abdu'l-Baha! However, even while living under the foulest of circumstances a prisoner in Akka (Read the Master in Akks--filth ankle deep and everyone sick with dysentery), while being plotted against by his own family, he never had any aspiration more than to be a servant to humanity nor ceased to be a prince among men.Baha'is will definitely enjoy this book. However, without a reference to the Baha'i Faith, I am not sure the general reader will get much out of it. Moreover, only after visiting Haifa and Akka can I say this book had its full impact on me.

It is amazing that English language readers have this fabulous translation of this book. But more importantly, finally it is available in digital form so that it is on my kindle and with me wherever I go. Others have written highly about this book. It is written in such a beautifully descriptive style, that you feel that you are an observer watching on the sidelines and witnessing what life was like during the time of 'Abdu'l-Baha in Akka.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. As a Baha'i I've wondered what life was like in the Holy Land for Abdu'l-Baha. This documents all the intrigues of the enemies of the Faith explaining why Abdu'l-Baha was in prison for so many years. It gives first hand impressions of what it was like to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit which emanated from the Master. The book was well written. It was thankfully not an academic exercise in documentation but had an extremely personal feel. I look forward to re-reading it in about a year or so.

Unbelievable book about the history of the Baha'i Faith and surrounding circumstances during the time of the imprisonment of Abdul'Baha in Akka. The book is the diary/memoirs of Youness Afroukhteh, who served as the secretary of Abdul'Baha and was a physician.

This book is a treasure for Baha'i's, capturing so beautifully what it was like to be in Abdu'l-Baha's presence in Akka. The authors heartfelt and often humorous accounts of those times are priceless.

This is a remarkble memoir that intimately relates the wondrous Example of 'Abdu'l-Baha during those dark and critical years following the passing of Baha'u'llah. Written by the Master's secretary who saw first hand how the goodness of 'Abdu'l-Baha triumphed over every evil plot launched against Him during one of the most dangerous times in His Life. I was moved so much that I had to read it a 2nd time and still am left in wonder.

This book quotes Vince Lombardi as saying, "Dancing is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport." The book takes things a step further by analyzing the why's and how's. Where else will you find NFL players ranked by the amount of momentum they can generate as one example? If you're a fan and have even a smattering of technical interest, this is THE book.

I love books that teach you something when you aren't looking! This book was the perfect blend of stories, information, science and it was funny too! Watching football will never be the same now that I have been armed fun trivia facts to share with my family and friends.Dr. Ramirez has the gift of being able to explain complex science and mathematics in a way that is easy for anyone to understand and is fun to read! I can't wait to see what topic she decides to "tackle" next!

I don't know much about football, but I am a longtime fan of Dr. Ramirez and her video series, Science Xplained. I figured, if she could explain quasicrystals and thermoelectrics to this English major, she could give me a few "talking points" at the next Super Bowl party. Using history, trivia, and anecdotes, she makes the game of football fascinating and accessible. I read this book from cover to cover. A classic!

I was expecting this book to take on questions not answered in Dr. Timothy Gay's the Physics of Football, but it actually went a different direction and it was an enjoyable read because of it. From football coaches using the scientific method to the history of the game, I had a hard time putting this book down.

Gift.... well received

Interesting concepts that mix the scientific and football worlds together. Would recommend as a good book for both sides to read about.

I am a 70+ woman and loved this book. I follow football ever since my boys played.

Great read, written very well. In reading the book, I found myself doing side reading and research about the topics and especially the scientific examples. I would recommend this book for football lovers and intellectuals alike, bringing a different spin to the interesting intersection of science and America's favorite and most intriguing sport.

very creative

This was an excellent purchase, and 12/10 would high recommend to a friend. Having purchased adult coloring books in the past, I can honestly say that this book matches, if not exceeds, the others in quality, design, and creativity. Like many published coloring books, "The Heart of Coloring" finds its theme in anatomical hearts. However, unlike other coloring book themes, you can still find variety among the different pages allowing the person coloring to draw something new rather than the same pattern on another animal. This book is ideal for those who like to color in both large, empty spaces and small, detailed drawing.

Fantastic product! The designs are creative and delightful and are a joy to color. The physical book itself is extrememly high quality, and you can tell a lot of care was put into every individual page. All the proceeds go to the charity ArtStart, so there is really no reason to hesitate buying this book. I am very satisfied with my purchase (as an original backer on Kickstarter), and I know this artist is destined for big things!

This coloring book has designs for every mood I am in. If I want to color a more intricate design, this book has them. If I want to color in a geometric pattern and let my imagination take over, this book has gorgeous designs. I love that the designs are all single sided, so I can cut them out and give them to friends, write letters on the back, or hang them up. The concept of all of the designs being in the shape of anatomically correct hearts is so cute! Look no further for a coloring book for any age.

So creative! I always loved coloring and now I can re-visit this art in a grown-up way...the designs are unique and every time I turn the page I find a new surprise. I think I am actually going to frame a few of my final colorings...they are way too cool to hide on a book shelf!!Of course, I bought this book for myself but I think this would be a GREAT gift...with a nice set of colored pencils...for that friend or family member who is hard to buy for...thoughtful, fun, and so creative! Thanks Xixi!!!!

Adults will find calm and creativity, children will appreciate the wide amount of space and choice of heart shapes to color. Use pencils, markers, or crayons - they all work great on the superb texture and quality of the paper. The design and professional hand work of the heart drawings are like fine art and even worth framing once you are done coloring. This book is a must for all households who appreciate quality time creating master pieces.

A beautiful coloring book with endlessly inventive variations on the heart theme. I have found coloring in this book to be wonderful stress relief! I especially appreciate how the designs vary in intricacy so you can choose a design with large open spaces to play in or with smaller detail work - Xixi's gorgeous designs appeal to any mood you may be in!

I really love this book. I was new to coloring and have now discovered a wonderful new hobby! The designs are all so original and stylish, each with its own theme and unity, and I love trying to come up with new coloring ideas for each one. The creativity and imagination in these designs is remarkable as is the heart-themed concept itself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves coloring or is entirely new to coloring.

Jazz (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books), by Walter Dean Myers

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. The father-and-son team behind blues journey creates a scintillating paean to jazz. Walter Dean Myers infuses his lines (and the rests between them) with so much savvy syncopation that readers can't help but be swept up in the rhythms. "Stride," for example, narrated by a piano man, captures the spirit of a "band on fire." On a delphinium-purple page, below each line of white type ("I got jump in my feet, and I'm turning up the heat, left hand hauling"), two significant words from that line dance in black script ("jump"/ "feet"), functioning like the chords a jazz pianist uses as percussive punctuation within a tune. Visually, the page's typography evokes long white and short black piano keys. Christopher Myers lays black-inked acetate over brilliant, saturated acrylics. The resulting chiaroscuro conjures the deep shadows and lurid reflections of low-lit after-dark jazz clubs. The artist dynamically enlarges key compositional elements: a massive bass, a long ago drummer's muscular back, and fingers—poised over keys, plucking strings, splayed along a flute. Design sings here, too: Louis Armstrong's spread upends, befitting that jazz giant. A cogent introduction, selective glossary and chronology round out this mesmerizing verbal and visual riff on a uniquely American art form. All ages. (Sept.) From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 5-9–Expanding on Blues Journey (Holiday House, 2003), this talented father and son have produced new poetry and paintings to explore a wider repertoire of jazz forms. An introduction provides historical and technical background, briefly touching on influences, improvisation, rhythm, and race. Spreads then pulsate with the bold, acrylic-and-ink figures and distorted perspectives that interpret the multiple moods and styles set forth in the text. The poems begin Along the Nile with a drumbeat and conclude with the heat of a Bourbon Street band. The Myerses experiment aurally and visually with the forms themselves; thus, Stride alternates long, fast-paced lines in a white font with two-word percussive phrases in black, calling to mind a period piano score. Be-bop unleashes a relentlessly rhyming patter in black, punctuated by a blue cursive font that screams. The 15 selections also celebrate vocals, various instrumental combinations, a funeral procession, and Louis Armstrong; New Orleans as spirit and place is woven throughout. The expressionistic figures are surrounded by high-contrast colors in which the visible brushstrokes curve around their subjects, creating an aura that almost suggests sound waves. Wynton Marsaliss Jazz A B Z (Candlewick, 2005) offers an interesting comparison and complement: varied poetic forms and stylized, posterlike visuals present the lives of jazz musicians. Interaction with each inspired title informs the other and awakens interest in listening.–Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. We first discovered this book-CD set at the local library when our son was two, and he loved dancing to it and turning the pages as he danced. Then it disappeared from the library, so we bought it for his fourth birthday. This time, he enjoyed playing his drums along with it. It's an excellent combination of music and book, with beautiful pictures, and I highly recommend it, especially to people who love music and words, and want their children to understand that love, if not also share it.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with great poetry for the young jazz lover!

I gave this book to my son for Christmas. He's a Jazz student and History major at a local University, and loves the book. Walter Dean Myers is a great writer, and his son's a talented illustrator.

Very nice illustrations. It is more of poetry than a story about jazz, but I do appreciate it. I'd read this with probably late elementary age kids.

Any one who loves jazz and the jazz culture will be wooed by this lovely book. Illustrations by Christopher Myers and fine poetry by Walter Dean Myers written in the text like music itself. This is a fine book for all ages, a treasure to American heritage.

The introduction and the timeline at the end were great. I should have looked more into the content of the book, however, because the rest of it was not as informative as I had expected. There were pages of poems that I'm assuming were meant as song lyrics, and not being a jazz expert, am assuming they were by the author rather than actual jazz musicians....which is not really that exciting to me. The illustrations are nice and now that I see the author and illustrator have the same last name, I can see this was probably more of a vehicle for the artwork of a relative than anything worthwhile from a literary perspective.

The book would have been great if it had come to me in one piece, but the binder was all torn. So the only thing I can think to do with it is frame the pages.

Okay. A bit of a confession here. Back in 2003 I wrote a review of "Blues Journey" in which I said many nice things including, "This is the book that took my breath away", which is fairly expansive even for me. Three years have now passed, and what father/son team Walter and Christopher Myers did for the blues they are doing now for jazz. Looking back on "Blues Journey", I realize that at the time this was not a book I was particularly good at understanding. I had the wherewithal to know that it was beautiful, but if you asked me the number of times I've thought about "Blues Journey" in this three year interim, the answer would be hardly at all. "Jazz" is different. I know it sounds unlikely, but I think this book has something its predecessor lacked. "Jazz" has a purpose, defined by its dedication ("To the children of New Orleans") and brought to searing sizzling life by both its author and its artist. No one can tell you after perusing this book that "Jazz" isn't hot as all get out.An introduction. For two green pages we are given some facts before the fancy. What is jazz? Where are its roots? How did it grow, prosper, and come to flourish? Where is it today? That's a lot to slip into two little pages, but before you know it you've learned a fact or two and on you go to the poems. They echo what we've just discovered about the music itself. You're looking at a man, bare to the waist, beating out a rhythm on the drum just in front of him. Now it's a black silhouette of a piano player poised against a shifting deepening red background, lit from below. We're in New Orleans following a jazz funeral, then looking down on a charismatic keyboardist with a zoot suit of fine scarlet lines. Beautiful women croon to men curved over, above, and around their instruments. It's jazz, baby. With a glossary in the back and a timeline for kicks.Right off the bat I'd like to thank Mr. Myers senior for explaining something to me in his lengthy two-page Introduction that I didn't even know I didn't know. The birth of jazz: how did it happen? The answer can be found in a small selection at the bottom of the first page. "Since so many black musicians were still not formally trained in reading musical notation, there had to be some way of knowing what the other players were going to do so that they could perform together". So they used common chord structures that would allow them to "stray from the melody" and come back to it howsoever they were inclined. You would think that your average twenty-eight-year-old American would have picked up this kind of information somewhere amongst their various meanderings. Not so much. To Mr. Walter then, a debt of gratitude.Music related books for youth, be they picture books, novels, or comic books, have the awesomely difficult task of conveying an absent sense through words alone. Sometimes a picture might help, but it is the rhythm of the words that keep the toes tapping and throat humming. When this book began I wasn't quite in the right mind set. I read the poems the same way you might read something by Robert Frost or Emily Dickinson. But even my Neanderthal brain began to get into the swing of things when I encountered the poem, "Oh, Miss Kitty". It starts with a kind of blues refrain about the sweet Miss Kitty who's anything but small. Then the poem starts to get going. Without realizing it, your brain has suddenly started to add additional voices aside from the person "singing" the song. You read, "she's in love with the piano man" when suddenly words of a different color and font jump out of nowhere to say, "tickle them ivories, boy!". Who said that? To my mind, it's the jazz orchestra itself. And without even realizing it I'm hearing different voices, tones, rhythms, beats, and all with just the gentle prodding of Walter's words and some creative font use. Combine that with, what Joann Sfar in "Klezmer" called the, "silent melody of drawing", and you're as close as you'll ever get to fooling your ears through your eyes.I also happen to think that Christopher Myers is getting better and better as the years go by. A quick glance at the publication page and we see that the illustrations were done, "by painting black ink on acetate and placing it over acrylic". I have no idea what that means. Fortunately, I don't need to. Christopher is pushing himself here, bringing to mind scenes of remarkable beauty. A bassist stands in the harsh white light, all white features against black shadows. I like Myers better when he presents his musicians rather than his dancers. For some reason, the swing dancers in "Jazz" seem to have less verve and pep than even the most soulful of saxophonists. Sometimes Christopher messes with you too. The poem "Sesssion II" about a slide trombone is coupled against the image of a man playing the drums. "Session I", begins with, "Bass thumping like death gone happy", but instead there's a horn player standing front and center. Still, jazz is an ensemble creation. You don't blame an instrument if it appears where you thought another might crop up. Some leniency is required. Not too long ago I was with a group of librarians discussing "Jazz" at their leisure. It was the opinion of some that in spite of its picture book packaging, this is a teen book at its core. No violence or sexual references inspired such an assumption. It's just that "Jazz" has a kind of sophistication to it that children may not be accustomed to. I hear now the mighty roar of the masses saying something to the equivalent of, "Well GET them accustomed to it!". Why place this book in an area where teens will pooh-pooh it for its young packaging while the audience that might get something out of it finds it out of reach and inaccessible? And I agree with you there. Still, I would suggest that for those libraries savvy enough (savvy may equal rich in this case) to risk it, try putting "Jazz" in both areas. It won't speak to all the kids or all the teens, but sometimes "some" is just enough. We all have our favorite jazz related picture books. Most were created by Chris Raschka ("Charlie Parker Played Be Bop", "Mysterious Thelonious", "John Coltrane's Giant Steps", amongst others) with others filtering in here and there. My favorite is "Jazz". No children's book, to my mind, has acknowledged the New Orleans hurricane tragedy yet. No children's book has had the chance. And while I am certain that "Jazz" was in production before the hurricane ever hit, Myers and son have tipped their hat to the city's brilliant musical past with just the right book. You'd be a fool to let yourself pass this one up.

From the Back Cover

This lively account of a pioneering anthropologist's experiences with a Navajo family grew out of the author's desire to learn to weave as a way of participating in Navajo culture rather than observing it from the outside. In 1930, when Gladys Reichard came to stay with the family of Red-Point, a well-known Navajo singer, it was unusual for an anthropologist to live with a family and become intimately connected with women's activities. First published in 1934 for a popular audience, Spider Woman is valued today not just for its information on Navajo culture but as an early example of the kind of personal, honest ethnography that presents actual experiences and conversations rather than generalizing the beliefs and behaviors of a whole culture. Readers interested in Navajo weaving will find it especially useful, but Spider Woman's picture of daily life goes far beyond rugs to describe trips to the trading post, tribal council meetings, curing ceremonies, and the deaths of family members.

The author was one of the first white women to ever request assistance from Native American women with learning to weave in a traditional manner. Her story is of the two years she spent with Native American culture families and so much more. Would recommend this as a reading requirement for high school students.

This is a wonderful work done by an early woman anthropologist, recounting her time among the Navajos in the early 20th Century.

Loved the story and all the great historical and cultural information. I have been to this area (Ganado, St Johns and Four Corners Area) a few times and it really spoke to me.

Gladys Reichard catches the end of an era when the Navajo are still living according to their customs. While learning to weave she also learns to honor and respect the traditions that have sustained them. Her story telling invites you into the life of her "family" and preserves the beauty of their many traditions.

Great little book

great

As someone with a keen interest in the Native American culture as well as a newly addicted fiber lover, this book is a treat for all the senses. History, culture, and a view from the inside into the Navajo creativity,

perfect

Thoroughly enjoy his writing

Not what I expected from a Shelby Foote book. Not bad stories but somewhat scattered

A collection of various authors. It is not a comprehensive study but an interesting presentation. No earth-shattering revelations. Worth the time but probablly not a keeper.

The list of American writers in this compilation is amazing. You will get perspectives of the Civil War from all sides and from characters you normally do not get to read about. This is great literature disguised as Civil War history. I loved this book.

I finished CHICKAMAUGA several days ago. Since then, I've been unable to whip-up enough mental energy to give it either an emphatic thumbs-up or thumbs-down. I guess you could say it's so-so. And writing the review approaches being a chore.Except for the first and last chapters, which I'll get to in a moment, these stories of the Civil War come from the point of view of the common man and woman, whether he or she be either a soldier in battle or a civilian caught up in the collateral damage. The first chapter is the inaugural address of Jefferson Davis at Montgomery, AL on February 18, 1861. The last chapter is Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address of March 4, 1865. The two serve as bookends to what comes in between, but it's hard to care (despite whatever eloquence the two have to offer.)As with most collections of short stories, these run the gamut from better to worse than average, and the two extremes cancel each other to result in my overall lassitude concerning the whole.Perhaps the best chapter is by, no surprise, Mark Twain: "The Private History of A Campaign That Failed" - an account of his time as a civilian irregular in Missouri at the outbreak of the war playing at soldier with a bunch of his buds, and who did more retreating in the face of real and imagined enemies than advancing to the sounds of battle. It incorporates Twain's characteristically wry, self-effacing humor, which, to me, made it the most readable of the lot.Perhaps the least deserving chapter is one by Stephen Vincent Benet: "Fish-Hook Gettysburg", a 25-page free verse summary of the event. There are so many excellent prose accounts of this decisive encounter that my reaction was "why bother?". The battle deserves better treatment.Another good one was the chapter entitled "The Night of Chancellorsville", in which a young prostitute, Nora, and a bevy of co-workers, while aboard a train on its way to Fightin' Joe Hooker's HQ at Chancellorsville, where they'll show the general and his staff a good time, are almost captured by the Confederates during the subsequent Federal rout. The story has an aspect of cleverness, at least. The prospect of capture by the Rebs causes Nora to think:"... the Rebs would capture us and send us down to one of those prisons you hear about where they starve you to death unless you sing Dixie all the time and kiss (un-PC word for Blacks)."One that I found particularly annoying was "The Burning" by Eudora Welty. Here, Southern belles, sisters Theo and Myra, are alone with their slaves on their plantation near Jackson, MS. After a band of Northern soldiers comes through raping and burning, the survivors straggle to tragic ends. At least I think so. Reading the story was like looking at something through a fine gauze mesh; all was slightly out of focus.I consider the late Shelby Foote one of the greatest U.S. Civil War historians; his monumental trilogy on the subject is a must read. Perhaps I was seduced into buying CHICKAMAUGA when I noticed his name listed as the editor. Had I to do it all over again, I wouldn't.

It seems like many writers like to write about the weaknesses in humanity. It is right to acknowledge these in all of us, but not to praise them.

Excellent service. Love this item!

Worth a reading.
