I really wanted to like this two-book set, but it's...just...weird.The setup is promising: Imagine a universe in which Dewey does defeat Truman, helping accelerate the fledgling space program; and a good thing too, because a meteor hits the Eastern Seaboard and wipes out virtually all of the government, creating a massive greenhouse effect that will render the planet uninhabitable within decades. Time to colonize space!...but that's about it with the setup, because the series quickly devolves into an Ozzie-and-Harriet "housewife in space" first-person narrative. The author doesn't seem to know what to do with the main character, so she loads the character with all sorts of "character": She's a WASP pilot from WWII (though none of that expertise really shows up once she's in space); oh, and she's Jewish; oh, and a specific Jewish sect; and her husband is absolutely perfect; and they have PG sex virtually every chapter; and she suffers from debilitating anxiety for which the cure is incessant recitation of prime numbers. Bless her heart!Even in alternate-universe world, this character wouldn't be qualified for space. But oh, she make a killer Chocolate Chess Pie when she's in the kitchen of the rocket headed off to Mars!Even this nonsense might warrant a complete read-through if the alternate universe concept wasn't simply abandoned for the Peyton Place narrative. Just one example: The book mentions Eisenhower as a rare survivor after the meteor wipes out millions, including virtually all of the government, in 1952. So, he's alive and kicking. Within three chapters, he's forgotten and never brought up again, even though in our universe, he was a two-term president and with his military chops, he most certainly would have been at the apex of power in the alternate universe. The author was apparently too busy giving us yaw/pitch/roll coordinates every other chapter.Some of the narrative moves the plot forward, and the two-book series ends with the heroine on Mars. And that's it. Lots of blissful ignorance once the author establishes that Earth is doomed; there is no way even in this alternate universe that tiny footholds on the moon and Mars are going to save humanity.Instead, it's mostly a series about how wonderful it would have been if women had been allowed into NASA in the 50s. Kind of a vanity "what if" thought exercise committed to paper in a fiction form. You may find it mildly interesting.

Mary Robinette Kowal pulls off some amazing feats in this, the second half of The Lady Astronaut. For one thing, she's created an enormously sympathetic character who manages to unwittingly alienate most of her acquaintenances through simple and human mistakes. She has also created an alternate history in which, plausibly, humans have established a lunar colony and are launching an expedition to Mars--in 1961. Remarkably, she does this without any hand waving or magical new technology. The members of the Mars expedition are calculating maneuvers by hand!As someone who lived through 1961 (well before Koval was born) I was constantly amazed at her attention to detail, whether it's in Elma York's kitchen, the painfully difficult math, or racial and social tension. It's all seamlessly woven into the story and never trips up the narrative. There were a couple of things that brought me up short, thinking "not in '61" but, yes, you could have a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land on board your ship to Mars.As long-time SF readers, some of us may have become jaded by countless tales of interstellar empires, but The Fated Sky is a reminder that getting into space is hard and it's magical.

This is the continuation of THE CALCULATING STARS. This alternate history space adventure begins in in 1961. Elma is returning from the moon where a small colony has been established when the return ship goes off course and lands in Alabama instead of Kansas. They are invaded by six armed men who hold them hostage because they are angry that scarce resources are being devoted to the space program instead of dealing with problems on Earth that have been caused by the meteor strike some years earlier.Elma is rescued but the incident has long-lasting consequences. Some of the men who hijacked the ship were Black which just highlighted the racial divide that existed in the United States at the time. The racial divide is also apparent in the space program where there are very few who aren't White and those are often given lesser jobs.The main focus of this story is the plan to colonize Mars. Because good publicity is needed and Elma is famous as the Lady Astronaut, she is asked to join this Mars expedition. This is a hard decision for her and her husband Nathaniel in many ways. It will mean another separation and putting off starting a family. The trip will take at least three years. Nathaniel's job as an engineer in the space program means that he will have to remain on Earth. Additionally, adding Elma to the mission one year in means that another astronaut - her friend Helen Carmouche, nee Liu - is being bumped from the mission. Helen is from Taiwan which causes more conflict as the switch makes the mission even less ethnically diverse. Elma faces resentment from her fellow crewmates because she bumped Helen and because she is so far behind in the training. It doesn't help that Stetson Parker is the mission commander. He and Elma have been at odds since they met during World War II.The mission begins and many problems are faced including clogged toilets, an E Coli outbreak on the other ship which kills the ship's doctor, an ammonium leak that forces the crew of Elma's ship to move to the other ship until it is repaired. One of the most enduring problems is that the co-pilot of the second ship is from South Africa and really believes in Apartheid which makes it even more difficult for the Black members of the mission. Then, the mission loses contact with Mission Control on Earth which makes them all feel abandoned and concerned about their loved ones left behind.This was a book that I couldn't put down. Each scene was so suspenseful that I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. The politics on Earth and within the space program had enough detail to make the story very realistic. In fact, many of the newspaper articles the began many chapters were actual articles from papers of the day.

I was a nerd 1975-2003 in the L. Ron Hubbard staff writings category.So Janis' much anticipated book (s), intertwined with Hubbard's writings of the same period she writes about in her two books, just helped rewrite and revise that history in my mind.Hubbard turns out to be a big cry baby. Janis just lays down irrefutable first hand, day by day, stories of his life, when she was one of his Commodore's Messengers.The only "OT" (supernatural event) she witnessed was one time he quietly did a sort of mind telekinetic concentration to project (supposedly) his will over a long distance, to ameliorate some ongoing tragedy occuring elsewhere on earth.Hubbard never soul-fly, never in the day to day events of her years at Hubbard's beck and call, waiting in the hall outside his office, to carry messages for him, never did she witness by him or anyone else, any obviously supernatural event. Coincidences here and there, of course, but no soul-flying, no mind over matter, no ashtrays flying around for Hubbard to tap his KOOL cigarette ashes into, no, the Commodore's Messengers had to carry the ashtrays for Hubbard to tap his ashes into. He was unable to move a single ashtray with his mind. (This is somewhat of an ongoing inside joke, when it has been long revealed the Commodorie's Messengers had to carry Hubbard's ashtrays, since the beginner Scientologists on one of their training levels do a training drill called "TR-8" which they shout at ashtrays and demand the ashtrays rise into the air, but in reality, no one of course ever makes the ashtrays physically rise my their mind power).The biggest lesson of Janis' books to me, a long term hopeful dupe of the Scientology movement, was that Hubbard displayed no supernatural powers, never, not once.The book was truly sobering and history revisionism in a positive way.Thankyou eternally Janis Grady Gillham.

They sought to portray Hubbard as a saint, but in the end were simply unable to go beyond issuing a select encyclopedia of feel-good photos and articles.Unauthorized biographies have sought to demonize Hubbard and portray him at his worst, based mostly on a disparate variety of limited accounts.This is the first author who brings years of personal and up-close experience, with a thorough attention to detail and avoidance of personal judgements except for occasional, appropriate expressions of what it was like for her at the time and how she felt.This is a highly valuable work continuing from the first book, and giving a real sense of the personality and life of the movement's leader and guru during the critical, formative years of Scientology on the high seas, where the Sea Organization was launched to serve and protect the fast-growing religion from its enemies - both real and imagined - continually evading them using Hubbard's knowledge gained serving in the U.S. Navy - including intelligence and counter-intelligence methods.For those who served this movement in any capacity, the book fills in huge gaping holes that could only have been filled with imagination guided by sharply limited facts. I just finished reading Janis’s second book and I can’t praise it enough.She takes you on her journey of mental and physical survival of the world she experienced when she personally worked for years directly with L. Ron Hubbard. I was there on the Apollo during some of these years and I was shocked and blown away as to how much I didn’t know about and I knew a lot. She sheds new insight as to who he really was. It is a real life horror story of a child surviving while working next to one of the world most notorious narcissistic paranoid demagogues.

This book is a rare look into Scientology in the 70s from a unique perspective. The detail of life on the "flagship" Apollo as L. Ron Hubbard travels from port to port and eventually back on to American soil. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Scientology.

I took a 3-day shooting course back in May of this year (never shot a gun before). Since then, I was going to the range once a week and doing my dry-fire practice every night. But my shooting wasn't really improving. I could get all (or nearly all) of my shots with a handgun on a 8.5"x11" target out to 25 yards, but I would occasionally miss, and the shots were all over the target. I was getting frustrated, and I wasn't sure what was going on, so I started researching and first stumbled upon Sajnog's video on front-sight focus.That was a revelation, to put it mildly. I realized that I was indeed looking at the front sight while I was shooting, but I wasn't f-o-c-u-s-i-n-g on the sight. I was so impressed with how well he related that lesson that I decided to buy his book to see what other tips and tricks he had. The information in his book finally solved the riddle of what I was doing wrong and unlocked what I needed to work on - I wasn't using a firm enough grip, and I wasn't really FOCUSING on the front sight, nor was I following up correctly (Sajnog hammers these concepts in his book). I followed his advice and avoided the range for two weeks to work on my dry fire. I also followed his advice and slowed down, eliminating fast draws from my routine in order to focus on concentration and technique. I went back to the range after two weeks, and I was keyholing shots, even out to 25 yards (not all of them, and not always exactly where I aimed for... I still have a lot of work to do). Now I dry fire practice with a purpose. I am getting compliments at the range now, and people are shocked that I've only been shooting for a few months. I am also working on my grip strength (also following Sajnog's advice), as I now understand how important a firm grip is to controlling the weapon and improving trigger control.So bottom line, this guy's materials were the information that I needed to get past my shooting plateau. Bear in mind that I only shoot handguns, so I have no idea about the rifle sections (I skipped those), but I can't imagine that they aren't also excellent. Also, this book frankly has a lot of superfluous info if you are not an absolute beginner. Pages and pages on safety, gear, etc. I didn't need those, but I'll take them for the other EXCELLENT lessons that I did absolutely need. Ten years ago, I sat down and read Jim Owens' books in an effort to improve my marksmanship with my rifles and pistols and got excellent results. The benefits of systematic training go without saying. In the southern United States most of us good-ol'-boys and girls grow up with guns in our hands, yet we never take the time or expend the effort to really learn to shoot. In spite of this lack of discipline, some of us manage to shoot reasonably well, but most end up being sloppy and inaccurate. Reading a book on the subject is looked down upon as nerdy and pretentious. But I submit that no amount of trigger time will ever compensate for disciplined and systematic training. I can remember reading Rogue Warrior, Dick Marcinko's (founder of Seal Team Six) biography as a teenager and hearing him wax poetical regarding the virtues of dry firing firearms as an essential element of training. I took it to heart and have benefited markedly as a result. Nevertheless, every time I say how important it is and how much I value it, people sneer at me like I am some kind of sissy before turning and shooting crappy groups or bump-firing aimlessly at discarded soda bottles 4 yards downrange. (Who's sneering now, you rednecks?) So you can imagine that when Sajnog jumped right in stressing the importance of dry-fire, it brought a smile to my face.As I said, I got my start with Jim Owens' books ten years ago. And Jim's series is great, especially for those who shoot service rifles competitively. Recently, however, I decided to see what the latest literature regarding marksmanship had to offer. Sajnog's Navy SEAL Shooting, with all of its positive reviews, was a natural choice. I ordered it. In my first read-through, I was delighted to find a wealth of fresh insight and perspectives regarding marksmanship. I was also shocked to find that many of the things that I have taken and practiced for years as gospel are just plain wrong. But Chris Sajnog's matter-of-fact writing style and intuitive and scientifically-backed methods won me over quickly. While I was quickly convinced of the merit of Sajnog's methods and theories, taking them from theory to practice was challenging. However, the effort is well worth it. My marksmanship, which had essentially plateaued, is once again improving.This book covers everything from the mental and physical aspects of marksmanship to the techniques of firearms manipulation in combat. It is a truly impressive body of work that will doubtless be THE foremost book on the subject of marksmanship for civilians, law enforcement, and military for decades to come. Sajnog's writing is clear and descriptive and the book is packed with extremely useful illustrations and photos.Though certainly not a shortcoming of the book, the shooting stances and many of the techniques for long guns are geared towards the M4/AR-15 platform. As such, there are certain elements that just do not transfer over to those of us who shoot more conventional rifles (in my case, lever guns.) Regardless, I was not disappointed with this book in any way.

Great book. Buy it! The cost of the book is about that of two boxes of ammo and it has saved me hundreds in ammo, hours driving to the range, and a lot of frustration.I looked at a number of training sources to improve my pistol shooting and then bought Navy Seal Shooting after watching some of Chris Sajnog’s You Tube videos. His training methods are proven and efficient. The book gave me the guidance to determine my weaknesses and to create my personal training plan. I have been following the plan for a few months and my marksmanship has improved significantly. Before reading this book I spent time and money on the range and did not see much improvement. Chris’ book showed me that most of my training should be dry weapons training which I can do at home at no cost. I have kept up the dry weapons training and keep seeing improvements when I go to the range to confirm that my training is working.After reading only part of the book I improved my grip, learned how to sight properly, and cured my long standing problem of flinching. After more reading and dry practice at home, my groups have shrunk to a quarter of the previous size. Improvements are possible with this training method, but you must be willing to put in some time. The book is a training method and not a training plan. It teaches you how to create a custom training plan for you. It also teaches you how each part of shooting should look. Actions are broken down into small pieces so the reader can train properly It would be great to have a coach, but that is not possible for me; this book allows me to do a lot of self-coaching.Chris also has a web site that offers a lot more content which looks like it would be helpful. For now the book alone is making a huge difference for me.

I recently treated myself to this book after reading about The Lost Kitchen and Erin's story. The book itself is absolutely beautiful, and the stories really give you a sense of place. I loved reading Erin's stories about Maine, her ingredient sourcing tales, and recipe notes. Really I wish there was more - this sharing makes it much more than a cookbook (which I personally love - I know not everyone feels this way about "cookbooks"). Erin's story is very inspirational to me personally as I'm in the beginning years of owning a small creative business. The recipes are varied - many traditional New England with a modern update. Many entrees feature meat (again, it's what's local and seasonal) which my family doesn't eat super often but we'll be turning to these when we do. There are some wonderful seafood preparations along with how-to's (ie. how to eat a lobster, anyone?) that I look forward to trying. Several desserts have also piqued my interest. If you eat seasonally, most especially in the northeast or Pacific northwest, you will find that these recipes call for easily sourced ingredients. Thank you so very much for sharing your story, Erin. I can't wait to visit your restaurant one day soon.

This book is beautiful, and the recipes look delectable (my disclosure is that the book just arrived and I haven't tried making any yet). I have fond memories of growing up in Unity/Freedom, ME. But not only does this bring me back to life in this small town, it brings me back to the very house I grew up in where the author now lives (so I had heard and now see). To see photos in this book of the red cape where I sang so many Happy Birthdays to the barn where I slept afternoons away in the loft, thank you, Erin French, for bringing it all back and sharing such a lovely place with others. Perhaps someday I'll be fortunate enough to make a reservation in time to enjoy your culinary talents at the Lost Kitchen on one of my many trips "home" each year. In the meantime, I'll practice perfecting your seared scallops from afar.

This cookbook is amazing! I wish I could make something from it every day. Erin French (author/chef) also has a restaurant in Freedom, Maine. I haven't been (because I sadly procrastinated with the reservation process - they book up for the year within 48 hrs of taking reservations and I screwed up with the postcard reservation deal this year), but anyone who eats food should try to go. The reviews are amazing, the setting is idylic, and the whole experience just seems magical. The Lost Kitchen. Look it up and go there. Seriously, look it up and go there. It is in an old mill building (beautifully renovated) located in the Maine woods - what's better than that?!

The most beautiful cookbook that I now have in my collection. Everything about it is classy. Erin French's story is engaging to read tied in with the enticing recipes, She also includes how to make handmade napkins and how to season a cast-iron skillet.The photographs are stunning. I am hoping that she will remain with the Lost Kitchen Restaurant for awhile so that I may be able to be one of the lucky ones to taste the magic from the cook that wrote this book. Karen

I want to eat at this restaurant. The author is a good writer and well worth taking the time to read her story. I have made several menus from this cookbook. I would use pumpkin from the can rather than cook your own squash. It was so salty I had to throw it away, it is a shame as the crust was delicious. The same for the pork roast - too salty. Unfortunately these were both items for Christmas dinner. The stew is perfect I used beef stew meat that I bought from the butcher. I will try more but will cut all salt in half.

I initially bought this recipe book for myself. The recipes are so good, and the book so pretty that I then bought two as gifts. My two giftees now want to buy some to give as well. The baked beans recipe is absolutely delicious!

All wonderful. I served the salad nicoise with halibut at a dinner party and the compliments included " the best meal ever". The peaches with honey are wonderful. I down loaded as soon as I read a review. Voila

Not the most practical cookbook...a lot of wood fired recipes and rare ingredients like rabbit and moose...I’ll only use a couple recipes at best

I like this well written, in depth, book explaining the Kabbalah. What I'd like to get clearer is that if the Creation written in Genesis is incorrect and the cosmos happened because of Ain Soph, etc. and the early Jewish leaders accepted an ill translated version of Creation; why is the Old Testament written down as it was, written with this ill translation, so accurate when it comes to the Bible Code? Would the Bible Code still work the same if the Old Testament was written as the Kabbalah says it should have been written?

Very good book, author can be convoluted at times but I still recommend.

So full disclosure that I've known Raef for a number of years as a colleague and friend. That fact makes it harder for me to be unbiased about this book compared to a work written by an author that I've never met. That said, I feel that this book is an excellent resource. What sets Raef's coverage apart from others in my opinion is two things: 1) the clarity/transparency of the writing and 2) the case studies that he uses to illustrate the points he makes.First, Raef does an excellent job of making difficult concepts easy to understand through *how* he writes. He's able to write in a manner that is both conversational and approachable, but that doesn't "talk down" to the reader. Moreover, he is careful to ground the topics he covers in "real world" examples that help to explain why the reader should care.This book covers quite a bit of ground: from fundamental security concepts to more advanced and technical topics. For a non-practitioner with an interest in security, this is the perfect introduction. It gives them the fundamentals supported by real-world evidence of why they matter. For the beginning practitioner, this provides a fantastic starting point as it serves as a sort of "gateway" to the security community. A new or more junior practitioner can directly "springboard" from this work into areas where they might need to do more detailed research for their particular job. This book lays out in detail the fundamental concepts that they need to understand to approach that material.All in all a great resource.

The book was informative if you know nothing about cyber security. It is very basic. Good for someone that just needs to know the very entry level info, this book isn’t for someone interested in getting into this field.

Not a bad book. It just didn't cover the issues we were looking for. Looks like it would be ok for someone who doesen't have many issues with Cyber security. For those who have a minor amount of saavy regarding the issue you might want to look elswhere. Again, it does say Cybersecurity for Beginners. It was well written with limited emphasis on crucial security issues for chronic attack targets.

A well thought out, intelligently written book on digital security issues and how to combat them, both before and after an attack. Great use of index of terms with their definitions at the end of the book.

Mr. Meeuwisse does an excellent work at doing an introduction about the general concepts of cybersecurity. In my opinion, the book is written for a "business-like" kind of reader and not so much for a technical person.Some parts, have to admit, i skimmed. But in general it is an outstanding book for anyone who doesn't know where to start!

As a n00b in thr cybersecurity space, I found this book to be incredibly insightful. The "Cyber-to-English" dictionary is quite helpful, too!

I learned so much information and events about cyber security that I once never knew! Very helpful for getting into the field. Covers the basics and informative.

A good start.
