I enjoy Anna's books they are easy to read, not too complicated and everyone can relate to her characters. This book is about an over powering husband trying to keep on top of finances [we all know what that is like]. Ella has inherited a small farm in Wiltshire England which has been in her family for some generations, but it has become run down since her parents died. She hasn't moved there as she has a busy, modern city life but decides to take a well earned break and stay there a short while to asses its potential, saving it for her daughter Amy. Her ruthless husband has other plans to swindle her out of it, needless to say their marriage is on the rocks. The farm turns out to have hidden rooms and an historic barn of great significance. Ella finds support for her ideas in a bed & breakfast and help with a local when unusual happenings haunt her. Love has a habit of sneaking up on you as the ending shows.

I enjoyed this story but a bit modern for me as I like more historic stories. A good plot but I have read better books by this author. She is still one of my favourite authors.

I enjoyed this book. It was a good story about village life in Wiltshire England. Well written and it kept you interested all the way through.Also there is a good insight into the listing of historic properties in England. A good read.

Was an amazing book. Was transported to the farm as though living with the characters and could imagine the whole layout.Fantastic Author.

I enjoy all Anna Jacobs books. I find her characters very human and interesting and although the plots are usually rather predictable the story around them is very readable and enjoyable.

Just finished reading Saving Willowbrook by Anna Jacobs. Saving Willowbrook is a wonderful snapshot of modern day rural life and the pressures financially superior urban dwellers apply. How folk flock to the uncomplicated country atmosphere to escape the over crowding of their grimy existence and in doing so bring unneeded baggage with them to share. Winding through this underlying theme is the most wonderfully moving story of love and commitment a person could ever hope to encounter. I enjoyed every minute of this charming read. --- An example of women's fiction at it's very best, five stars.

Not a book for beginners! This is very different from Shunryu Suziki's first book, "Zen Mind Beginner's Mind" which I loved and is great for all levels of readers. "Branching Streams..." is a commentary on a very advanced Zen Buddhist Text, the "Sandokai" and should be studied seriously in a group with a teacher and / or after a lot of other study and practice in Buddhist meditation and philosophy. If you are ready for it, it can be very enlightening and bring the eight century writings of Zen master Sekito Kisen to life, if not it will just confuse you.

This is a collection of talks about the Sandokai, an ancient Chinese poem that is regularly chanted in Zen circles. The poem itself is quite obscure when you first read it and the talks are similarly obscure at first. The rational mind finds it difficult to understand how you can, to take one of his examples, kill earwigs without violating the Buddhist precept against killing. Shunryu Suzuki uses such examples to try to help us move past our usual dualistic thinking.And, somehow, it works. By the end of the book when the poem is repeated in Suzuki's translation, it makes sense. He has successfully lead us into a place of darkness, that is a place beyond intellectual understanding.A book to be read slowly, in small doses, and to be contemplated, rather than analyzed and thought about.

IMHO a brilliant text on Zen Buddhism by the foremost Zen Buddhist teacher in America, the late Shunryu Suzuki! The impermanence of form and transmitting the lamp outside of the teaching is as always realizing egolessness, selflessness or no-mind--true composure--and living a beneficial life. That is all. That is Zen Buddhism. It is understood in the relative sense by a basic reading of the Ten Grave Precepts. Suzuki's teaching however is full of wit, honesty, kindness and compassion.

Publication of "Branching Streams," the commentary on the Sandokai by Shunryu Suzuki is a great benefit to those of us learning about Zen, and life, here in the West. Also, to those of us who "practice" or try to learn about Zen without benefit of teachers, and the guided life of a monastery. With this book we are there with Zen monks, sitting in the Dharma Hall learning the wisdom passed down by the "ancient sages" from the golden age of Zen.Of course, this is also a great benefit to those, such as monks, living a life dedicated to enlightnenment and living the Way. I can't begin to explain the Sandokai itself, or Master Suzuki's insightful commentary--suffice it to say that its true wisdom presented in a skillful way to help anyone living the most more mundane and ordinary life.

Zenji Suzuki is a master with a mission, to help us unenlightened get a deeper and clearer understanding of what his committed practice of zazen have lead him to: insight into his own nature - his "original face before he was born". He talks directly to us in a clear and non-esoteric way, a way designed to inform us and hopefully lead us into the same path he undertook many years ago. The path is not the understanding of the path, however, as he stresses to us. This book is the menu, but it is not the food.

Shunryu Suzuki books have the right blend of knowledge, inspiration and humour. This one captures a course he taught on a famous short piece of zen literature called the Sandokai. He knows how to interpret, explain and reveal without being pedantic, abstruse or arrogantly vague. Shunryu Suzuki's lectures on the Sandokai is an occasion for understanding zen, ourselves, and living everyday life.

This was a great, well written, sophisticated book on Zen that has made a difference in my life. It is based on the "Sandokai" -- a poem orginally written by the 8th century chinese Zen master Sekito. But, although it is "written" by a Japanese monk talking of traditional teachings, it is highly readable and understandable. In addition, and most importantly, it speaks to the heart and the core of Zen.However, it is probably not a for novice reader: "Zen Mind, Begginner's Mind", and "Not Always So" are excellent prerequsisites to this book. Although it is understandable, the ideas and teachings are rather advanced. The intro mentions that these teachings on the Sandokai are often the last that a Dharma teacher will undertake in his lifetime -- and this series of lectures was Suzuki's take on it shortly before he passed away.It took me an entire summer to read -- and I would frequently have to read a chapter 3 or 4 times before I felt that I had absorbed the trur meaning of what he was trying to say. That is, the teachings it presents can be absorbed on many different levels from superficial to very deep. It is up to the reader how deep they are willing and able to go...

This is an unusual poem from the 8th patriarch which is lovely. the commentary is pleasant and studious, trying to walk a fine line between academic and zen training to a student practicing. The tone of the teishos is delightful and very respectful of the patriarch's original intent. good selection.

I had high hopes due to high reviews, but I was very unhappy to find that only a small section of the book is actually about plants! You would think with a name like "Poolscaping" that the book would have had more to do about plants and landscaping around the pool. The book is instead divided in chapters about how to build a pool and many pictures on waterfalls and spa's. Very generic as a whole.

I was a little disapointed when I first got this book as the photos weren't all eye-popping fancy layouts - BUT - - I have found the book surprisingly good to read!! I've been up late every night pouring over it's content. It's written very, very well and you will learn some great hints, regardless of budget. I am so pleased I decided to write a review (which I've never done). I hope the authors continue to write on this suject! It's a GREAT BOOK! Thank you!

This book is a must have! It is beautifully illustrated and very informative. If you own a pool or are thinking about getting one this book is a great investment. It covers everything from choosing a design for your pool to plants and lighting. The pictures are spectacular! I Preordered this book and I'm glad I did. It was worth the wait.

Based on the description, I believed this book would be full of design ideas and photos of well-landscaped pools. It isn't. If you are looking (as I was) for examples to show a landscaper (or to do it yourself), you should look elsewhere.

The writer starts out with "Swimming pools have come a long way from the turquoise water holes surrounded by stark paving. Increasingly pools are being integrated into the design of the house and garden..."I'm happy to see a book on this topic, especially one written by an accomplished writer and photographer. Many garden swimming pools stand out like a sore thumb - a harsh rectangle of Hollywood blue water with cold tile edges. They're lovely and cool in hot weather, but UGLY. Anything that helps to change or disguise this is all good.The writer has many suggestions for doing just this. She addresses in depth topics such as decking, enclosures, structures, furniture and plantings. She has researched and offers suggestions for problems such as awkward rocky sites and the need to have an enclosure around the pool that doesn't block the view or make the place look like a prison.It was good to see a generous number of pages given to plants and plantings - everything from container planting to landscaping the entire site. The writer also focuses on planning ahead when installing a pool or landscaping around it, and on matters relating to the budget. Both are very important and often overlooked..The writer obviously has an encyclopedic knowledge of her topic and her writing is crisp and to-the-point. She understands the issues facing people who want to integrate their pool into their garden and addresses them directly. Her photographs illustrate her points with relevance and clarity. I'd recommend this book to anyone trying to add some style and class to a garden with a swimming pool.

I have read several of Mrs. Oke's books over the years and have enjoyed them immensely. They are simple stories which follow people through their lifetimes and demonstrate their walks with God and the necessity of having God in their lives. I really enjoy historical Christian fiction and enjoy reading about different time periods in America and England. Recently I re-read the "Seasons of the Heart" series and recalled my original enjoyment of these stories from 20 years ago. Who can forget Uncle Charlie drinking the "scalding hot coffee?" I read all four stories through and appreciated them all over again. I decided I wanted my sons to enjoy these books(15 and 16 years old) and assigned the first story of the series as a starter. It being a story about a young boy, Josh, and following his life up through adulthood, I thought it would be a nice read for them. Unfortunately, they both balked as soon as they saw the cover for the book. The slipcase is in pink with a young man and woman on the cover, obviously having just been married. The hardcover is in rose. Both of these color issues made my boys disinterested and not interested in even trying the book. They said it was probably a book for girls. This was very unfortunate, as this book is about family and focuses on a boy and there are many good lessons in these stories about walking with God as they deal with life issues, that I would have liked them to read. They finished the first story only and are very uninterested in reading the other three stories. I would just like to say that these books are for everybody and I would suggest to Mrs. Oke to redistribute them with different cover material, as they might just make it in a larger market if they didn't look like girl's books. Also, I would remove so many usages of the word "weep" as Josh deals with life's difficulties. Most men do not weep that much and that does make it sound like it is from a woman's perspective. I agree with men crying, but too much is too much. Otherwise, I would highly recommend these books for all women, girls and men/boys if these changes were made. The reader meets Joshua as a teen and through the epilogue sees what he becomes in old age. It is a poignant depiction of growing up on a farm in the early nineteenth century. It uses the historical events of the drought and the depression of the 1930s to blend history and show how it touched the lives of farmers. It is a love story with little of the Hollywood images of romance. Only through the strong faith of the family did they rise above the trials and tribulations. I liked how Joshua's doubts of God always gave way to deeper understanding of how God was directing his life. Janette Oke did an excellent job of character development--creating persons, settings and events that mold individuals. She took what seemed in Joshua's world as far off events of history and made clear how even those impacted his life and tested his faith. An excellent book to read, think on what has been read and pick up again. If you rush through, plan to read at a slower pace later.

This is one of my favorite Janette Oke series. The Canadian West is the other.This is suitable for Junior High children and up. My son actually read this series in 8th grade, which surprised me as he is not a reader of fiction, generally. The characters are believable and lovable. Oke develops the various plots well and moves the books through the seasons of life as one would experience the seasons of the years. I highly recommend this series.

This is a well-written, endearing story. This is a coming-of-age story told from the male perspective. Josh grows up before our eyes, enduring hard times on the farm. It's a page-turner. I had only read a few Janet Oke stories before and found them simplistic and predictable as well as preachy. But this book? Wow! It is deep, the characters are well developed and the Christian values expressed in it are second-nature to the characters and not at all out of place. I was surprised pleasantly to find that even when I got to the end, I wished for more. People who like "clean" stories and historical fiction will enjoy this book.

This was a wonderful series of books. Loved all of the adventures and finding true love. Put your hand in Gods hand and he will lead you, love this author and would recommend her writings to all ages . No surprises, no swearing, just good story telling.

This series of love stories is not just that. There a lot of love but there is also some action and a real story line. You will laugh and cry and smile a lot. If you like a books with romance but no foul language and words of sexual exploit then this is the kind of book for you. Janette Oke is a great author of books from the early years. This is not just one book but 4 books in one. So if you like to read love stories please purchase this book.

ANOTHER JANETTE OKE

After reading the Love Comes Softly Series and the Prairie Legacy, I couldn't wait to read another series by Ms. Oke. I was excited to get Seasons of the Heart in one volume. I just couldn't get into this volume though. I tried several times and just could not finish it. I have actually had the book for several years now, probably around five. Maybe one of these days. I even loaned it to a friend and she couldn't get into it either. Obviously, lots of folks do like it. So don't let me discourage anyone from reading it.

Part of my dissatisfaction with this book was my fault too, as I thought it was going to be a little more radical than it is.However I was dissappinted reading this because the ideas are simply not very creative: buy better windows, buy better fridge, buy better this, buy better that. But it never REALLY gave creative solutions. The ideas sre still based on moving the economy and production, which is inherently unsustainable. The title is misleading, as the ideas presented wouldn't really save the Earth, but rather just reduce damage. Instead of giving ideas that would lessen our dependence on energy in general, or replace technologies/designs with alternatives (example: alternative storing methods for cooling, rather than buying a product). It doesn't teach the recycling of products, or explain why a lot of designs are simply fundamentally flawed (example: buy new windows/insulation instead of explaining why modern conventional homes are inefficiently built to retain a homeostasis temperature).However its partially my fault, because if I would have looked at the title and realized what is implied by "Consumer Guide".Overall, this book does a good job helping you be a more efficient consumer, but don't expect to be causing any waves of inspiration with the advice provided here. If you're interested in saving maybe a few dollars, but still living within the safety of you're conventional lifestyle, this book is for you. However if your REALLY looking to save money, and save the Earth, you will be either dissappointed by this book, or lying to yourself. Psst, I found much better information online for free.So be a more efficient consumer and save your money by not buying this book! Lol
